Longwood Falls To UMKC 93-53 During Chicago Invitational Challenge Upper Division Championship

HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. -- Longwood University dropped a 93-53 men's basketball decision to the University of Missouri-Kansas City from The Summit League Saturday afternoon at the Sears Centre Arena in Hoffman Estates, Illinois during the Upper Division Championship of the Chicago Invitational Challenge.  The Lancers (2-5) fell behind 11-3 during the first 3:25 of the game and never recovered while led by senior Antwan Carter|St. Petersburg, Fla. (St. Petersburg) with 18 points and classmate Jeremiah Bowman|Washington, D.C. (Harcum JC) with 15 points.  The Kangaroos (3-4) were led by Reggie Chamberlain and Dustin Dibble, each with respective game-highs of 24 points.  Longwood will return home and play again on Friday night, December 2, hosting South Carolina State University of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference at Willett Hall in Farmville beginning at 7 p.m.

Longwood scored the first basket of the game as Carter was successful inside at 19:43.  UMKC answered at 18:59 on a basket by Chamberlain who went on to score 11 of his team's first 14 points as the Kangaroos led 11-3 at 16:35 en route to a 20-12 advantage at 11:29.  UMKC continued its torrid shooting, making four more three-point field goals, including three-straight by Dibble off the bench to lead 34-15 at 6:35.  The Kangaroos were in control at the break, leading 48-25 behind Chamberlain (18) and Dibble (11).  Carter had 12 points at the intermission for the Lancers.

UMKC scored the first six points of the second half with two more three-pointers, including one by Chamberlain, and quickly extended the margin to 30 points at 60-30 with 17:21 remaining on yet another triple from Chamberlain.  Only the final outcome was left to determine as the Kangaroos finished the contest making 16-24 three-pointers, including 8-12 in each half toward the final 40-point margin of victory.  UMKC made its last three-pointer, by Dibble, with just 1:28 left.

Carter led Longwood with his 18 points, adding six rebounds, while earning All-Tournament Team honors for his four-game efforts during the event.  Carter averaged 16.3 points and 5.8 rebounds while shooting 56% (29-52) from the field with two three-pointers, and 71 % (5-7) at the free throw line along with seven assists, five blocks, and two steals against BYU, Nevada, Prairie View A&M, and UMKC.  Bowman added 15 points and three assists for the Lancers.  LU shot 33% (20-60) from the field, including 8% (1-13) on three-pointers, and 71% (12-17) at the free throw line.

Chamberlain and Dibble led UMKC with their respective game-highs of 24 points each, including 5-6 three-pointers by Dibble off the bench, and 4-4 three-pointers by Chamberlain.  Nate Rogers had 13 points and five assists off the bench for the Kangaroos.  UMKC shot 64% (34-53) from the field, including 67% (16-24) on three-pointers, and 64% (9-14) at the line.

It was the third meeting between the two schools in men's basketball, and UMKC has won all three meetings.
