FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University dropped a hard-fought 87-83 men's basketball decision to visiting Canisius College of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Tuesday night at Willett Hall in Farmville.  The Lancers (1-2) led 73-71 with 4:08 remaining before the Golden Griffins (1-1) outscored the hosts 16-10 over the final 3:51, including 10 late points from Harold Washington who finished with a game-high and career-high 30 points.  LU was led by senior Jeremiah Bowman|Washington, D.C. (Harcum JC) with a career-high 27 points, and classmate Antwan Carter|St. Petersburg, Fla. (St. Petersburg) with 21 points and a game-high 15 rebounds.  Longwood will play again on Friday night, November 18, on the road at Brigham Young University of the West Coast Conference in Provo, Utah beginning at 9 p.m. ET.  It's the first game of the four-game exempt Chicago Invitational Challenge.

"That was a close, hard fought college basketball game," said ninth-year head coach Mike Gillian. "Like a lot of the games we are going to play this year, and there have been two of them already, this one was decided in the final few minutes. After taking that two-point lead with around four minutes to go, we were just not able to maintain our momentum and finish out the game. What we are going to have to learn from these experiences is how to keep ourselves in a position of advantage at times like that and ultimately find a way to come out on top."

Longwood led early at 7-5 after a three-point field goal by senior Martiz Washington|Hopewell (Christchurch) at 17:38.  Canisius, however, used a 23-8 run to take it largest lead of the game at 28-15 with 11:43 left in the first half as Alshwan Hymes scored 12 quick points that included three three-pointers.  It was 30-18 at 10:56 before the Lancers battled back with their own 12-2 run to close to within 32-30 at 8:28 on a layup from Carter, while Bowman had five points during the effort.  LU finally tied it at 38-38 with 4:45 remaining in the period on a pair of free throws by Carter, but the Golden Griffins led at halftime 44-43 as neither team scored over the final two-plus minutes of the half.

Longwood tied it again early in the second half on three occasions, including at 56-56 with 13:49 on the clock on a jumper by Bowman.  Canisius, though, extended its lead again and led 71-64 at 8:37 following a layup by Washington.  The Lancers fought back once-again, and took its first lead of the second half at 73-71 with 4:08 remaining on another basket from Bowman that capped the 9-0 run fueled by Bowman's six points and a three-pointer by sophomore David Robinson|Chesterfield (Cosby) that had tied it at 71-71 at 6:01.  Washington took over at that point, scoring the next 10 points for the Golden Griffins, his last basket for an 81-76 lead with 54-seconds left.  The visitors secured the outcome with 6-6 free throws over the final 24-seconds, and Bowman's three-pointer at the buzzer provided for the final margin.

Bowman led Longwood with his career-high 27 points, adding five assists.  Carter finished with 21 points and a game-high 15 rebounds for his 29th career double-double.  Washington added 16 points for the Lancers while becoming the all-time three-point field goal leader at the school with 197 career three-pointers.  LU shot 44% (29-66) from the field, including 31% (11-35) on three-pointers, and 64% (14-22) at the free throw line.

Washington led Canisius with his game-high and career-high 30 points.  Hymes added 24 points, while Chris Manhertz finished with 12 points and nine rebounds for the Golden Griffins.  CC shot 50% (32-64) from the field, including 30% (7-23) on three-pointers, and 70% (16-23) at the line.  It was the first meeting between the two schools in men's basketball.
