Series History
Longwood and Canisius are meeting first time ever in the sport of men's basketball. It is also the first meeting for the Lancers against a member of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC).
A Look At Canisius
Canisius is coached by Tom Parrotta who is in his sixth year with the program, compiling a record of 59-97, including a season-opening 82-73 road loss at James Madison (11.13). The Golden Griffins finished 15-15 overall during 2010-11, including 9-9 in the MAAC, and junior guard Gaby Belardo is expected to lead the team this year and was a preseason Second Team All-MAAC selection. Belardo is the top returning scorer (10.3) for Canisius while last year's team leader in both assists (3.9) and steals (1.4) as well. The Golden Griffins had four double-figure scorers at JMU, including junior guard Harold Washington (23), sophomore forward Chris Manhertz (16), junior guard Alshwan Hymes (15), and Belardo (11). Last year, Canisius averaged 68.1 points while shooting 42% from the field, including 35% on three-point field goals, and 70% at the line -- allowing opponents 67.5 points.
A Look At Longwood
Longwood followed its season-opening 78-70 home loss to Navy (11.11) with a 91-73 home win past NAIA Virginia Intermont (11.13). The Lancers closed the first half with an 11-5 run to lead 48-38 at halftime against the stubborn Cobras and were never threatened in the second half. LU was led by senior center
Antwan Carter with a double-double of 19 points and a game-high 16 rebounds, senior guard
Jeremiah Bowman had 17 points, and sophomore guard
David Robinson added a career-high 13 points off the bench in 19 minutes. Senior forward
Jan van der Kooij contributed eight points and a career-high 13 rebounds. LU shot 50% (33-66) from the field, including 40% (10-25) on three-pointers, and 44% (15-34) at the free throw line.
