BOX SCORE

FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University took a 91-73 men's basketball victory past visiting Virginia Intermont College Sunday afternoon at Willett Hall in Farmville.  The Lancers (1-1) closed the first half with an 11-5 run to lead 48-38 at halftime against the stubborn NAIA Cobras (2-3), and were never threatened in the second half en route to the home triumph.  LU was led by senior Antwan Carter|St. Petersburg, Fla. (St. Petersburg) with a double-double of 19 points and a game-high 16 rebounds, classmate Jeremiah Bowman|Washington, D.C. (Harcum JC) had 17 points, and sophomore David Robinson|Chesterfield (Cosby) added a career-high 13 points off the bench.  Virginia Intermont was led by Justin Morris with a game-high 27 points.  Longwood will return to action on Tuesday night, November 15, hosting Canisius College of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference at Willett Hall in Farmville beginning at 7 p.m.  The Canisius game will receive live television coverage on FOX College Sports Atlantic (FCS Atlantic) and Mid-Atlantic Sports Network (MASN), and will feature a WHITE OUT promotion as all fans are encouraged to wear white attire to show team spirit and pride for Lancers.

“It always feels great to win,” said ninth-year head coach Mike Gillian.  “The guys on this team have done a good job preparing for the season -- they put in the work to be ready for it to begin.  Friday night against Navy, we had good effort but were not able to turn that into good performance.  This afternoon was a little better in that area, but we still have some room for improvement and a lot to prove.  First and foremost, we have something to prove to the fans.  We need the Lancer faithful to come out in full force for the 'WHITE OUT' Tuesday night, and show a national television audience once again what the atmosphere in Willett Hall can be like.  There is a group in particular that is unbelievable at our games and I know they will be fired up to be back in town for Tuesday -- that is Jon Atkinson's men's soccer team returning with their ASC Championship Trophy!  Go Lancers!!”

Longwood started slowly against Virginia Intermont, trailing 20-12 at 11:58 as Morris made two early three-point field goals.  The Lancers took the lead for good at 26-24 with 7:25 left in the half after back-to-back layups from Bowman who scored eight-straight points for a 30-24 advantage at 6:40.  The Cobras were within 37-33 at 2:46 before LU outscored VIC 11-5 to take the 48-38 advantage at the intermission.  Carter had 11 first-half points, while Bowman and Robinson each scored nine first-half points, including 3-4 three-pointers by Robinson.

Longwood extended the margin to 62-50 at 14:56 as five different players scored, including two baskets inside from Carter.  VIC made a final push to within 62-54 with 12:50 remaining before the Lancers pulled away with a quick 7-0 run that included a layup by redshirt-senior Durann Neil|Pleasantville, N.J. (Leap Academy), a three-pointer by sophomore Mark Parker|Clayton, N.C. (West Johnston), and two free throws by Robinson to lead 69-54 at 9:52.  It remained a double-figure advantage the rest of the way as LU took its largest lead at 88-67 with 1:24 left on a pair of free throws from Bowman.
