FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University dropped an 80-61 men's basketball decision to visiting Colgate University Sunday afternoon at Willett Hall in Farmville. The Lancers (5-12) trailed the entire contest while led by junior
Antwan Carter|St. Petersburg, Fla. (St. Petersburg) with a game-high 16 points, adding eight rebounds, and he surpassed 1,000 career points as well. The third-year standout now totals 1,009 career points at LU, the 18th player to accomplish the scoring milestone in school history. The Raiders (1-11) of the Patriot League led from start to finish and won their first game of the season while led by Brandon James with a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds. Longwood will return to action on Tuesday night, January 4, at the United States Naval Academy, also of the Patriot League, in Annapolis, Maryland beginning at 7:30 p.m.
Colgate scored the first five points of the game on a layup from James and a three-point field goal by Joe Hoban at 16:36. Longwood did not score until 4:27 into the contest on a layup by junior transfer

Durann Neil|Pleasantville, N.J. (Leap Academy), followed by a three-pointer from Washington made it 19-10 at 10:44, but Colgate took advantage of a 25-9 run to lead 44-19 at 1:07 en route to a comfortable 44-21 lead at the intermission. Pat Moore led the Raiders with 10 first-half points.
Longwood managed to close to within 48-30 early in the second half with 17:19 remaining after a layup from Washington. Colgate, however, put together another good run -- this time at 17-10 -- to expand the margin back over 20 points at 65-40 with 8:56 on the clock. James scored the first eight points of the run, and added a free throw later, before Nick Pascale capped it with an offensive putback dunk. The Lancers made one final run and pulled to within 71-57 at 3:52 as Carter scored six quick points, but the hosts could get no closer. The Raiders outscored LU 9-4 over the final 3:15 for the final disappointing outcome and margin.

LU shot 34.5% (20-58) from the field, including 18.2% (4-22) on three-pointers, and 56.7% (17-30) at the free throw line. The Lancers were out-rebounded 53-21, including 19 offensive boards for the visitors.
James led Colgate with his double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds. Pascale added his own double-double of 13 points and a game-high 15 rebounds, Moore finished with 12 points, and Yaw Gyawu had 10 points. CU shot 51.7% (30-58) from the field, including 42.9% (6-14) on three-pointers, and 63.6% (14-22) at the line. Colgate is the 11th opponent in 17 games to shoot better than 50% from the field against the Lancers.
It was only the third meeting between the two schools in the sport of men's basketball since 2009 as Colgate now leads the young series at 2-1, including two-straight wins. Longwood will play at Colgate in exactly one month on February 2, in Hamilton, New York, at 7 p.m.
