NEWARK, N.J. -- Longwood University won its third-straight men's basketball game Saturday afternoon, defeating host NJIT 64-55 on the road in Newark, New Jersey. The Lancers (7-16) won just their second road game of the season and were led by redshirt-senior
Dana Smith/Woodbridge, Va. (C.D. Hylton) with a game-high 19 points. The Highlanders (7-14) were led by Chris Flores with 17 points. Longwood remains on the road to play at Fairleigh Dickinson University on Monday night, February 8, in Teaneck, New Jersey beginning at 7 p.m..
Longwood fell behind 4-0 early at NJIT before using an 11-2 run to lead 11-6 at 15:36 as Smith (4), sophomore
Antwan Carter/St. Petersburg, Fla. (St. Petersburg) (4), and junior
Aaron Mitchell/Matoaca (Manatee CC) (3) each scored points, including a three-point field goal by Mitchell. The Lancers led 20-10 at 9:34 following a three-pointer from sophomore
Martiz Washington/Hopewell (Christchurch), and LU extended the advantage to as many as 17 points at 34-17 as senior
Kevin Swecker/Manchester, Md. (Mount Saint Joseph) made consecutive three-pointers, and the visitors led comfortably 36-20 at the intermission.
Longwood took its largest lead at 40-22 with 19:06 remaining on a tip-in basket from Carter, and the Lancers still led 50-36 with 10:29 on the clock following a layup by Carter. NJIT used a 12-4 run to close to within 54-48 at 6:40 as Jheryl Wilson scored five quick points. The Lancers, however, answered with six-straight points to lead 60-48 with just 2:56 left as Carter scored again inside before Smith made four free throws to help LU secure only its second road win this season.
Smith led Longwood with his game-high 19 points, including 11 points in the second half, adding seven rebounds while limited to 28 minutes with foul trouble. Carter added 16 points, including 10 points in the second half, and a game-high 13 rebounds for the Lancers, his fourth double-double of the season, and Mitchell finished with 10 points. LU shot 46% (25-55) from the field, including 25% (4-16) on three-pointers, and 56% (10-18) at the free throw line.
Flores led NJIT with his 17 points, while Wilson had 16 points, and Nick Lopez 11 points for the Highlanders. NJIT shot 36% (22-62) from the field, including 11% (2-19) on three-pointers, and 64% (9-14) at the line. Longwood also won its fifth-straight game against NJIT, and now leads the series at 5-2.
