The Lancers battled and trailed 63-48 with 9:06 left to play on a layup from Carter but a three-pointer by Dairese Gary made it 66-48 at 8:54. That was the score with 8:24 remaining when the fire alarm system went off in the storied and historic venue that prompted the evacuation of the facility as a precaution due to excess smoke in the concession areas of the building. There was an approximate 30-35 minute delay before the teams returned to the court and resumed the contest after a brief warm-up period. It was all Lobos after the delay as the hosts scored 12-straight points en route to a 21-1 run that eventually became a 25-6 game-ending spree over the final 8:04. Chad Adams had 13 of those points for UNM.

The Lobos forced 20 Longwood turnovers that were converted into 31 points and a decisive difference in the game.
It was only the second-ever meeting between the two schools in the sport of men's basketball as New Mexico defeated Longwood 79-60 exactly four years ago tonight (12.17.2006) during the first-round of the Findlay Toyota|Las Vegas Classic. The Lobos are the two-time defending Mountain West Conference Champions.
