Longwood Falls At Big East School Seton Hall 78-51

NEWARK, N.J. -- Longwood University dropped a 78-51 men's basketball decision on the road Monday night at Big East Conference member Seton Hall University at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. The Lancers (3-8) dropped their sixth-straight game while led by junior Antwan Carter|St. Petersburg, Fla. (St. Petersburg) with 15 points and nine rebounds. The Pirates (5-4) closed the contest with a 22-4 run over the final 9:31 while led by Fuquan Edwin and Jordan Theodore with their respective game-highs of 17 points each. Longwood will play again on Friday night, Dec. 17, at the University of New Mexico of the Mountain West Conference in Albuquerque at The Pitt beginning at 9 p.m. ET. It will be the first game of the four-game exempt iBN Sports|Las Vegas Classic.

Longwood scored the first basket of the game as senior Aaron Mitchell|Matoaca (Manatee CC) made a jumper at 19:47. Seton Hall answered with 10-straight points to lead 10-2 at 17:08 as Edwin scored five quick points and Theodore made a three-point field goal. The Lancers fought back with a 14-9 run to pull within 19-16 at 11:25 after another jumper from Mitchell, and it was still a three-point game at 27-24 following a three-pointer by freshman David Robinson|Chesterfield (Cosby) at 7:36. LU was aided early by four three-pointers from junior Martiz Washington|Hopewell (Christchurch). The Pirates, though, outscored the visitors 19-5 over the final 6:47 of the first half to lead 46-29 at the intermission as Edwin had 13 first-half points, while Theodore and Jeff Robinson each scored 11 first-half points.

Longwood battled back into the contest to start the second half, closing to within 48-38 at 17:02 following an old-fashioned three-point play by redshirt-junior Durann Neil|Pleasantville, N.J. (Leap Academy). The Lancers were within single digits at 56-47 with 10:20 remaining after a layup from Mitchell. Similar to the first half, Seton Hall put together another big run, this time outscoring LU 22-4 over the final 9:31 to take control and cruise to the home victory. For the game, over the final 6:47 of the first half and the final 9:31 of the second half, the Pirates owned a 41-9 scoring advantage.

Carter led Longwood with his 15 points, adding nine rebounds and three assists. Washington finished with 12 points for the Lancers, and Mitchell added 10 points. LU shot 40.0% (20-50) from the field, including 23.8% (5-21) on three-pointers, and 66.7% (6-9) at the free throw line. Longwood played without starting point guard, junior transfer Jeremiah Bowman| Washington, D.C. (Harcum JC), who missed his first game of the season with an injury.

Edwin and Theodore led Seton Hall with their respective game-highs of 17 points. Robinson finished with 15 points for the Pirates. SHU shot 41.4% (29-70) from the field, including 23.1% (6-26) on three-pointers, and 77.8% (14-18) at the line. The Pirates forced 22 Longwood turnovers that were converted into 28 points.

It was the first-ever meeting between the two schools in the sport of men's basketball.

The Lancers are in the midst of a 13-day, 6-game trip away from Farmville that includes additional road games at New Mexico (Dec. 17, 9 p.m.) and Colorado (Dec. 19, 4 p.m.), along with two neutral-site games in Las Vegas, Nevada at the Orleans Arena against SIU Edwardsville (Dec. 22, 2:30 p.m.) and either The Citadel or South Carolina State (Dec. 23, 2:30 or 5 p.m.) during the iBN Sports|Las Vegas Classic.
