Longwood Falls On Road At In-State VMI 114-82

LEXINGTON, Va. --
Longwood University dropped a 114-82 men's basketball decision on the road Saturday afternoon at in-state opponent and Big South Conference member Virginia Military Institute in Lexington. The Lancers (3-7) dropped their fifth-straight game while led by junior Antwan Carter|St. Petersburg, Fla. (St. Petersburg) with his sixth double-double of 20 points and 11 rebounds, and senior Aaron Mitchell|Matoaca (Manatee CC) with 20 points and nine rebounds. The Keydets (7-4) were led by Austin Kenon with a game-high 26 points, including seven three-point field goals, and Stan Okoye with a double-double of 21 points and a game-high 14 rebounds. Longwood will play again on Monday night, Dec. 13, at Big East Conference member Seton Hall University in Newark, New Jersey at the Prudential Center beginning at 7 p.m.

Longwood scored the first four points of the game at VMI as Carter made a layup and Mitchell converted two free throws at 18:31. Carter's layup at 17:37 made it 6-5, though it would be the last lead of the day for the Lancers. VMI used a 13-0 run to take control at 18-6 with 14:46 on the clock as three different players made three-pointers, including one from Kenon. VMI led 31-15 at 9:57 following eight quick points from Okoye. LU battled back into the contest with a 17-7 run to close to within 38-32 with 4:13 left in the half as Mitchell scored five points. VMI, however, closed the period with a 17-9 run to lead 55-41 at the intermission while aided by another three-pointer at the first-half buzzer.

Longwood managed to close within 12 points early in the second half at 62-50 with 17:13 remaining after a three-point play by redshirt-junior Durann Neil|Pleasantville, N.J. (Leap Academy). VMI, though, extended the advantage to 20 points at 70-50 with 15:37 on the clock following another three-pointer from Kenon. The host Keydets accounted for their largest margin of the game with their 15th and final three-pointer at the final buzzer made by delighted reserve Drew Absher.

Carter and Mitchell led Longwood with their respective 20 points, with Carter adding 11 rebounds for his double-double while Mitchell had nine rebounds and four assists. Neil added 11 points and four assists for the Lancers. Junior transfer Jeremiah Bowman|Washington, D.C. (Harcum JC) had 10 points. LU shot 43.7% (31-71) from the field, including 20.0% (4-20) on three-pointers, and 61.5% (16-26) at the free throw line.

Kenon led VMI with his game-high 26 points (7-13 3FG), adding five assists. Okoye had his double-double of 21 points and a game-high 14 rebounds, adding five assists for the Keydets. D.J. Covington added 16 points off the bench, and Rodney Glasgow had 15 points, seven rebounds, and a game-high seven assists. VMI shot 55.1% (43-78) from the field, including 44.1% (15-34) on three-pointers, and 59.1% (13-22) at the line. The Keydets' bench outscored the LU bench 41-21.

It was the fourth meeting between the two schools in the sport of men's basketball as VMI now leads the series 3-1.

Longwood was playing its first game in seven days following fall semester examinations that finished late Friday. The Lancers are in the midst of a 13-day, 6-game trip away from Farmville that will include road games at Seton Hall (Dec. 13, 7 p.m.), New Mexico (Dec. 17, 9 p.m.), and Colorado (Dec. 19, 4 p.m.), along with two neutral-site games in Las Vegas, Nevada at the Orleans Arena against SIU Edwardsville (Dec. 22, 2:30 p.m.) and either The Citadel or South Carolina State (Dec. 23, 2:30 or 5 p.m.). The latter four games are each a part of the exempt iBN Sports|Las Vegas Classic.
