Longwood Falls To Marshall 62-54 On Second Day Of Lancer Classic

FARMVILLE, Va. - The Longwood University women's basketball team fell to Marshall University of Conference USA 62-54 on Saturday evening in Willett Hall in Farmville on the second day of the Lancer Classic. The Lancers (1-1) were led by junior Brittanni Billups | Goldsboro, N.C. (Eastern Wayne) who recorded her first double-double of the season with 21 points and 14 rebounds against the Herd (1-1). Longwood returns to action on Friday, November 19, when it hosts High Point University of the Big South Conference in Willett Hall at 7 p.m..

The Lancers fell behind early but tied the game at 8-8 with 15:11 remaining in the first half on a three-pointer by junior Morgan Smith | Williamsport (Williamsport). Smith followed with a layup to put Longwood ahead for the first time of the game at 10-8 with 13:49 remaining in the half. The Herd slowly pulled out to a 17-12 lead with 5:54 remaining in the first half, but Longwood went on a 13-2 run over the next 4:30 to take the 25-19 lead with 1:22 remaining in the half. Billups scored six points for the Lancers during the run. Marshall scored the final four points of the half as Longwood took a 25-23 lead in to halftime.

In the second half, Longwood pushed the lead back to four at 29-25 after a layup by Billups. Adrian Randall hit a pair of foul shots and Rashedah Henriques made a three-pointer to put the Herd back on top at 30-29 with 18:11 remaining in the game. Henriques pushed the lead to seven with another three-pointer with 16:19 remaining. The lead swelled to 10 points after a jumper by Tynikki Crook with 11:40 remaining. The Lancers trimmed the deficit 48-44 with 7:28 left after a 9-3 run. Crook and freshman Bria White | Silver Spring, Md. (Bethesda-Chevy Chase) traded baskets, but Marshall slowly pushed the lead back to 10 at 60-50 with 1:15 remaining in the game. The Herd scored their final five points from the line.

The Lancers shot 32.1% (18-56) from the floor, including 13.3% (2-15) from behind the arc, and 66.7% (16-24) from the foul line. Billups scored 21 points on 8-for-20 shooting while going 5-for-8 from the foul line and grabbing a game-high 14 rebounds. White added 11 points and three rebounds. Junior Mina Jovanovic | Smederevska Palanka, Serbia (Salt Lake CC) scored eight points, including going 6-for-6 from the foul line, with seven rebounds and three assists. Longwood scored 18 second-chance points after grabbing 17 offensive rebounds. The Lancers outrebounded Marshall 46-40.

The Herd shot 39.0% (23-59) from the floor, including 22.2% (2-9) from behind the arc, and 58.3% (14-24) from the foul line. Marshall had three players finish in double-figures, led by Crook with 16 points. Henriques added 14 points while Alaya Mitchell scored 10 points with three assists and three steals. Crook also recorded a double-double with 11 rebounds. Marshall turned 24 Longwood turnovers into 27 points and outscored the Lancers in the paint 30-16.
