BOX SCORE

RICHMOND, Ky. -- Longwood University earned a 1-0 women's soccer shutout victory on the road at Eastern Kentucky University of the Ohio Valley Conference (OVC) Wednesday afternoon in Richmond, Kentucky. Junior Dylan Spicker|Sherman Oaks, Calif. (Hickory-Va.) scored the lone and decisive goal of the match in the 61st minute for the visiting Lancers (11-7) against the host Colonels (7-9-2). Longwood will play its final match of the season this Sunday afternoon on Halloween, October 31, hosting Morehead State University of the OVC for Senior Day at the Athletics Complex on Johnston Drive beginning at 1 p.m. As always, admission is free for everyone.

Longwood and Eastern Kentucky battled through a scoreless first period with the closely-played contest tied 0-0 at the intermission. The Lancers took the momentum early in the second period and Spicker tallied her second goal of the season at 60:38, unassisted with a shot from just outside the box and over the keeper's head for the game-winner. The Colonels looked for the equalizer over the final 30 minutes but had three shots stopped by graduate keeper Marcia Biddle|Woodbridge (Gar-Field), while another attempt was blocked in traffic.

“Today was definitely a character-type of win for us,” said 17th-year head coach Todd Dyer '93. “It was a tough trip and we just weathered the storm and eventually were able to create a few chances. The volley that Dylan struck on the goal was absolutely clinical.

“Our ladies showed a lot of heart today and just refused to be denied. It's nice to win our last road game of the year and we'll look forward to coming back home and honoring our seniors on Sunday.”

Eastern Kentucky had a narrow 13-11 advantage in shots, including 4-3 in attempts on-goal, and led 5-4 on corner kicks as well. Biddle played the duration (90:00) in front of the net for the Lancers with four saves to earn her fifth shutout among the team's nine this fall. Stephanie Lynch played 67:36 for the Colonels with one save and one goal allowed, while Lindsay Vance played 22:24 with one save.

It was the first-ever meeting between the two schools in the sport of women's soccer. On Senior Day, Longwood will be attempting to win its ninth consecutive contest at home this fall that would conclude five years at the facility with a record of 36-9-1 (.793), including 9-1 this season with a triumph in the finale.
