Chelsea Coward/Mechanicsville (Hanover) scored 12 points. Davidson (7-7), winners of five straight games, was led by Julia Paquette and Alex Thompson who each scored 15 points. The Lancers return to action Tuesday, January 12, when they travel to Lynchburg to take on Liberty University of the Big South Conference at 7 p.m..
The Lancers jumped out to an early 2-0 lead when senior
Becky Fernandes/Fort Belvoir (Bishop Ireton) made a layup. The two teams traded the lead early in the game.
Crystal Smith put Longwood ahead 5-2 with a three-pointer with 18:13 remaining in the half off a pass from Fernandes. The Wildcats pulled ahead but the Lancers kept it a three-point game until the 10:54 mark when Chloe Woodington made a pair of free throws to put Davidson ahead 18-13. Those two points started an 11-0 run that put the Wildcats ahead 27-13. A three-pointer by
Krystal Garrison/Fredericksburg (Courtland), her 100th-career three-pointer, snapped a 5:20 Longwood scoring drought and made the score 27-16. Davidson extended the lead to 17 points but the Lancers trimmed the deficit to 12 at 35-23 at halftime.
Longwood continued to cut in to the lead to start the second half, narrowing the margin to 35-27 with 18:35 remaining after a pair of free throws by
Crystal Smith. Davidson pushed the lead to 17 at the 10:46 mark as Thompson scored Davidson's next 10 points. The Lancers went on an 11-2 run to trim the Davidson lead to 61-53 with 4:30 remaining. Sophomore
Brittanni Billups/Goldsboro, N.C. (Eastern Wayne) scored five points during the run. Longwood would not score again after the run as Davidson scored the last eight points of the game to make the final score 69-53.
Billups scored 11 points for Longwood on 4-11 shooting. The Lancers shot 30.0% (18-60) from the floor, including 28.0% (7-25) from behind the arc, and 76.9% (10-13) from the foul line. Longwood had 14 steals and 10 assists, with Fernandes recording five assists. The Lancers turned the ball over 17 times.
Davidson out-rebounded Longwood 50-26, led by Sophia Aleksandravicius with a game-high 14 boards. Aleksandravicius had a double-double as she scored 11 points. Ashley Lax was the fourth Davidson player in double-figures with 12 points. The Wildcats shot 46.7% (28-60), including 36.4% (4-11) from behind the arc, and 90.0% (9-10) from the foul line. Davidson had 25 turnovers and 17 assists. The Wildcats outscored Longwood 44-22 in the paint and had 14 second-chance points.
