Longwood Falls At Campbell 82-70

BUIES CREEK, N.C. - The Longwood University women's basketball team fell at Campbell University of the Atlantic Sun Conference 82-70 on Monday night in Buies Creek, North Carolina. The Lancers (4-12) were led by freshman Chelsea Coward/Mechanicsville (Hanover) with 17 points, including the first 15 points of the game for Longwood. Campbell (8-4) was led by Courtney Cannon with 16 points. Longwood returns to action on Wednesday, January 6, when they travel to Davidson, N.C., to take on Southern Conference foe Davidson College at 7 p.m..

Coward was hot early, converting on five of her first six attempts from behind the arc in the first 6:41 of the game, giving Longwood a 15-8 lead with 13:19 remaining in the first half. A layup by freshman Erin Neal/Durham, N.C. (Hillside) pushed Longwood's lead to nine points at 17-8 with 12:54 remaining. Campbell went on an 9-0 run to tie the game at 17-17 with 10:43 left in the half. Junior Krystal Garrison/Fredericksburg (Courtland) scored 10 points as over the next nine minutes as the game stayed close with four lead changes. Campbell pulled away to a seven point lead with 1:48 remaining. Freshman Crystal Smith/Richmond (Meadowbrook) hit a pair of three-pointers to cut Campbell's lead to 40-39 at halftime. Longwood hit 55.8% (10-18) of their three-pointers in the first half and shot 46.7% (14-30) from the floor.

The game went back and forth to start the second half as the period had five ties and two lead changes. The Camels pulled out to a seven point lead at 60-53 with 10:23 remaining in the game but Longwood cut the deficit one at 62-61 with 7:24 remaining after a layup by Garrison. The Lancers evened the scored at 64-64 when senior Becky Fernandes/Fort Belvoir (Bishop Ireton) hit the first shot of a two-shot foul with 5:52 remaining. Campbell's Kate Cloxton hit a pair of free-throws but Neal countered with a layup to keep the game tied at 66-66 with 5:17 remaining. Neal's layup would be the last field goal the Lancers made as Campbell went on a 16-4 run to end the game.

Garrison scored 16 points (3-5 3FG) while Fernandes and sophomore Brittanni Billups/Goldsboro, N.C. (Eastern Wayne) each scored seven points and three steals. Billups and freshman Heather Tobeck/La Porte, Texas (La Porte) each had three blocks.
 
The Lancers shot 52.2% (12-23) from the line while Campbell converted on 84.0% (21-25) of their foul shots. The Camels out-rebounded the Lancers 46-34 and turned 17 offensive rebounds in to 18 second-chance points. Longwood turned 21 Campbell turnovers in to 23 points. Campbell's bench scored 39 points.
