Longwood Runs Past Washington Adventist 112-90

FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University led 63-36 at halftime en route to a 112-90 men's basketball victory past visiting Washington Adventist University Saturday night at Willett Hall in Farmville. The Lancers (5-16) were playing their first home game since December 28 following seven-straight on the road, and were led by redshirt-senior Dana Smith/Woodbridge (C.D. Hylton) with his sixth double-double this year of 24 points and 11 rebounds while sophomore Antwan Carter/St. Petersburg, Fla. (St. Petersburg) added his fourth double-double with career-highs of 20 points and 19 rebounds. The Division II Shock (4-14) were led by Jamie Newton with a game-high 31 points. Longwood will remain at home and play again on Tuesday night, February 2, hosting High Point University of the Big South Conference at Willett Hall in Farmville -- a game designated as “Greek Night” and "White-Out" beginning at 7 p.m..

Longwood jumped to an early 15-2 advantage at 17:17 behind five quick points from Smith, and the Lancers led 28-10 at 13:06 as Smith outscored the Washington Adventist team early with his 11 points. The hosts led by as many as 29 points (63-34) in the opening half while taking a commanding 63-36 halftime lead behind 16 first-half points from Smith, and 14 points each by Carter and junior Aaron Mitchell/Matoaca (Manatee CC). Longwood maintained a 20-point plus margin during the entire second half while playing everyone in uniform with every player scoring for the hosts. The Lancers surpassed 100 points at 4:29 on an offensive rebound follow dunk by senior Billy Robinson Jr./Columbia, Md. (Hammond). Freshman Stephen Shockley/Leesburg (Heritage) closed the scoring with back-to-back three-point field goals, his second and third of the game, with just under a minute remaining.

Smith led Longwood with his double-double of 24 points and 11 rebounds, adding six assists. Carter added his career-highs of 20 points and 19 rebounds for the Lancers. Mitchell contributed career-highs of 21 points, seven rebounds, six assists, and three steals, while senior Kevin Swecker/Manchester, Md. (Mount Saint Joseph) had 10 points and a career-high seven assists. Robinson had 10 points as well off the bench, while Shockley finished with a career-high nine points (3-4 3FG) off the bench too. LU shot 51% (44-86) from the field, including 38% (9-24) on three-pointers, and 71% (15-21) at the free throw line. The Lancers posted new season-highs for points, field goals, rebounds (60), and assists (33) while outscoring the visitors 60-33 in the paint and 28-4 on second chance opportunities with 22 offensive rebounds.

Newton led Washington Adventist with his game-high 31 points, adding seven assists and six rebounds. Shane Brown added 11 points off the bench for the Shock, Antonio Ortega had 13 points, and Darrick Williams finished with 10 points off the bench. WAU shot 46% (27-59) from the field, including 44% (8-18) on three-pointers, and 62% (28-45) at the line. The visitors shot 28 of their 45 free throws in the first half as the hosts committed 27 personal fouls during the contest.

Longwood and Washington Adventist (formerly known as Columbia Union College) were playing for only the second-time ever in the sport of men's basketball as the Lancers now lead the series at 2-0 with their victory.
