WASHINGTON ADVENTIST GAME NOTES (PDF)

FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University will host a pair of upcoming men's basketball home games over the next few days as the Lancers welcome both Washington Adventist University and High Point University to Willett Hall in Farmville. Following seven-straight road contests, the Lancers (4-16) are scheduled to play Division II Washington Adventist (4-13) on Saturday night, January 30, at 7 p.m. before High Point (10-9) visits on Tuesday night, February 2, also at 7 p.m.. The WAU contest is not expected to be affected by this weekend's weather forecast as both the visiting team and game officials are scheduled to arrive in town Friday night. Tickets remain for both home contests and will be available at the Willett Hall Ticket Office or by calling 434.395.2138.

The Saturday night game against WAU is part of the "Coaches vs. Cancer Suits and Sneakers" awareness weekend, a collaborative initiative of the American Cancer Society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC). Participating NABC member coaches, including Longwood seventh-year head coach Mike Gillian along with his assistants Bill Reinson, Doug Thibault, and Tim Fudd, will wear sneakers instead of dress shoes with their suits during the game to demonstrate their support for the American Cancer Society and its vision of a world with less cancer and more birthdays. All fans are also encouraged to wear sneakers to the game Saturday night as well. The Lancers defeated the Shock 106-46 last Jan. 31 in the only other meeting between the two teams.

Longwood continues to be led by veteran sixth-year medical redshirt senior Dana Smith who is averaging 17.1 points and 7.1 rebounds. Smith is followed by sophomore Antwan Carter (14.0 points, 7.1 rebounds), junior Aaron Mitchell (7.7 points), senior Kevin Swecker (7.3 points), sophomore Martiz Washington (7.2 points), and senior Billy Robinson Jr. (7.1 points). The Lancers are 3-3 at home this season and looking forward to playing in front of their fellow students again for the first time since December 5. Longwood has averaged 80.0 points over the six games in Willett Hall this season with an average attendance of 781, though much higher at 1,410 for the two home games with the students here on campus.

The Tuesday night game against Big South Conference member High Point has been designated “Greek Night” for all Longwood sororities and fraternities. The always popular annual promotion for the school's Greek community will feature special contests and prizes throughout the contest, including at halftime. It's also been designated a “White-Out” with all non-Greek students and fans encouraged to wear white to the contest. The visiting Panthers are currently tied for third-place in the Big South with a conference record of 5-4. The Lancers are 5-13 all-time against HPU, including last year's 81-69 setback on the road in North Carolina; their last win over the Panthers was by a score of 69-64 on a Sunday night in late January 2007 here in Farmville.

All Longwood men's basketball games can be heard locally on WVHL Radio, Kickin' Country 92.9 FM, as well as the Internet via TEAMLINE linked at www.longwoodlancers.com.
