LEXINGTON, Va. -- Longwood University women's cross country totaled 18 points to finish second among three teams Friday evening at the season-opening VMI Relays in Lexington at the Virginia Horse Center. The host Keydets took first place with eight points, while Washington & Lee University placed third with 19 points. The Lancers will compete again on Saturday, September 12, at the James Madison Invitational in New Market near Harrisonburg.
In Lexington, the non-traditional relay race included groups of two runners completing two legs of 1.5 miles each for three miles total. Longwood was led by junior
Natalie Auble/Fairfax (Fairfax) and sophomore
Jessica Alley/New Castle (Craig County) who finished third with their combined time of 39:06. They were followed by seniors
Jacquelyne Chantry/Williamsburg (Lafayette) and
Melinda Lackore/Virginia Beach (First Colonial) (40:45, 6th), along with junior
Lauren Kuhns/Fredericksburg (Riverbend) and freshman
Megan Short/Erial, N.J. (Timber Creek) (43:44, 9th). Also competing but only completing one leg were senior
Laura Bland/Las Vegas, Nev. (Palo Verde) (10:07) and freshman
Alisha Royal/Vinton (William Byrd) (9:57).
