BOX SCORE

LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Longwood University dropped a disappointing 1-0 women's soccer road decision at nearby Liberty University of the Big South Conference Wednesday evening in Lynchburg.  The Lancers allowed a late goal on a corner kick opportunity by the Flames while falling to 7-4.  Liberty prevented Longwood from sweeping its Big South opponents this season and improved to 3-6; the Lancers were 4-1 against Big South schools this fall.  Longwood will play again on Sunday, October 4, returning home to host Ohio school Wright State University of the Horizon League for the first-time ever at the Athletics Complex in Farmville beginning at 1 p.m..  Admission is free.

Longwood and Liberty were scoreless through the first 45 minutes, though the hosts controlled the action while taking a 9-1 advantage in shots.  The Lancers began the second period with a heightened urgency and pressured the Flames non-stop for the first 12:35, out-shooting them 7-1, but could not find the back of the net.  Liberty settled down and the two teams played somewhat evenly the rest of the match as Heather Bowling scored her first goal of the season at 76:51 on a header off the corner kick by Rachel Wisehart.  The visitors managed just one shot the remainder of the one-goal contest.

“We did not score a goal so we can't complain about the result,” said veteran 16th-year head coach Todd Dyer '93.  “We had some good chances but just weren't able to put them away.”

Liberty took a 20-10 advantage in shots, including 10-5 in attempts on-goal, and the Flames had a 3-2 edge on corner kicks.  Junior transfer Jessica Varela/Midlothian (Clover Hill) led Longwood with three shots, including two on-goal.  Redshirt-junior keeper Marcia Biddle/Woodbridge (Gar-Field) played the entire match in front of the net for the Lancers with nine saves.  Karen Blocker played the duration for Liberty with five saves.
