FARMVILLE, Va. - Longwood University tied Elon University 0-0 in men's soccer on Friday evening in a neutral site match in Greensboro, N.C.. Sophomore Zack Mahon/San Antonio, Texas (William Howard Taft) had four shots with one on goal for the Lancers. Longwood returns to action on Sunday, September 13, when it faces UNC Greensboro in Greensboro, North Carolina at 2:30 p.m..

Longwood's best scoring opportunities came in the first half. Sophomore Chris Saul/Pasadena, Maryland (Chesapeake) fed the ball across the field to Mahon who had one touch on the ball. His shot was tipped by the Elon goalkeeper just over the bar. Minutes later, senior Martin Vickerton/Derbyshire, England (Kirk Hallam CTC) had an unopposed shot from 18 yards but his attempt skimmed the top of the crossbar.

Longwood also had a chance to score in the second overtime period, but a header by freshman Parker Arnold/Columbia, South Carolina (Darlington Academy) went high.

“We weathered an early storm tonight and created more chances as the match went on,” said Longwood head coach Jon Atkinson. “For us to play 110 minutes in this heat down here was really something. We fell into a good rhythm as the game went on. This young team really matured a lot tonight.”

Longwood goalkeeper Joel Helmick/Springfield (W.T. Woodson) had five saves, including three in the first half.

Elon out-shot Longwood 19-10, including 9-4 in the first half. The Phoenix held an 8-5 advantage in corner kicks.
