FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- Longwood University dropped a 2-0 women's soccer road decision at Northeast Conference member Sacred Heart University Sunday afternoon in Fairfield, Connecticut. The Lancers dropped to 0-2 this season while the host Pioneers improved to 1-1. Longwood will return to action on Friday, September 4, hosting Big South Conference member Coastal Carolina University at the Athletics Complex in Farmville beginning at 7:30 p.m.. It will be a collegiate women's soccer doubleheader on Friday at Charleston Southern University and the University of Richmond are scheduled to play at 5 p.m.. Admission is free to all soccer matches at Longwood University.
Longwood trailed 2-0 at the intermission as Sacred Heart scored its two goals just two minutes apart before the halfway mark of the opening period. Scoring goals for the Pioneers were Jen Mulvey (15:34) and Amanda Stiles (17:34), each assisted by Samantha Kee while Leigh Dogmantis also was credited with an assist on the second goal from a corner kick opportunity.
Sacred Heart took a 16-8 advantage in shots, including 8-3 in attempts on-goal, while the Pioneers had a 5-1 edge in corner kicks. Longwood received two shots on-goal from sophomore
Kacie Oliver/Portsmouth, R.I. (Portsmouth) while junior
Alex Myers/Stafford (Colonial Forge) added one attempt on-goal. Redshirt-junior keeper
Marcia Biddle/Woodbridge (Gar-Field) played the first 45 minutes in front of the net for the Lancers, allowing both goals with four saves. Freshman keeper
Kyra Byron/Richmond (Mills E. Godwin) played the final 45 minutes in front of the net for LU with one save. Meghan Reichelt earned the shutout in front of the net for Sacred Heart with three saves.
It was the first-ever meeting between the two schools in the sport of women's soccer.
Following Friday's action at the Athletics Complex, Longwood will play Charleston Southern on Sunday, Sept. 6, at 2:30 p.m., following a match between Coastal Carolina and Richmond scheduled for 12 p.m..
