BROOKLINE, Mass. -- Longwood University dropped a 3-0 women's soccer road decision at defending Colonial Athletic Association Tournament (CAA) Champion Northeastern University Friday night in Brookline, Massachusetts. The Lancers were opening the 2009 regular season as the host Huskies scored all three goals in the final 26 minutes of the match played near Boston. Longwood will return to action on Sunday, August 30, at Northeast Conference (NEC) member Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, Connecticut beginning at 1 p.m..
Longwood and Northeastern battled scoreless through the first half before the defending CAA Tournament and second-round NCAA Tournament participants scored two goals in less than six minutes about midway of the second half. Scoring goals for the Huskies were Kelly Matthews (63:34) and Liza Rebello (69:29), each assisted by Devin Petta. Greta Samuelsdottir added a final goal for the hosts at 87:12, assisted by Heidi Mogstad on a corner kick.
Northeastern took a 24-7 advantage in shots, including 10-3 in attempts on-goal, while the Huskies had a 3-1 edge in corner kicks. Longwood received shots on-goal from juniors

Marcia Biddle/Woodbridge (Gar-Field) played the duration in front of the net for Longwood with seven saves. Stephanie Gordon earned the shutout in front of the net for Northeastern with three saves.
It was the first-ever meeting between the two schools in the sport of women's soccer.
