Longwood Falls At Chicago State 94-84

CHICAGO, Ill. – Longwood University dropped a 94-84 men's basketball decision on the road at Chicago State University Monday night in Chicago, Illinois. The Lancers (14-12) dropped their second-straight contest while led by senior Ryan Bogan/Oxford, Pa. (Harcum JC) with a game-high 21 points. The Cougars (16-12) were led by David Holston with a game-high 21 points, including 15-16 free throws. Longwood will play again on Saturday, February 21, hosting Colgate University of the Patriot League at Willett Hall in Farmville beginning at 2 p.m..

Longwood fell behind 13-6 at 14:04 as all five players scored early for Chicago State. The Cougars led 28-8 at 9:47 after consecutive three-point field goals from Holston, the only two baskets of the game for the nation's third-leading scorer (25.9). The Lancers were within 30-15 at 8:10 as junior Billy Robinson Jr./Columbia, Md. (Hammond) scored five quick points and redshirt-junior Dana Smith/Woodbridge (C.D. Hylton) added a basket. CSU took its largest lead of the half at 40-17 with 4:52 left until the break before LU managed to close to within 52-34 at the intermission while outscoring the hosts 17-12 to close the period.

Chicago State maintained the advantage in the second half, extending the lead to as many as 23 points again at 73-50 with 11:38 remaining. Longwood was within 77-61 at 7:54 after an 11-4 run but the Cougars once-again widened the margin and led 81-62 with 6:08 left following two free throws from Holston. The Lancers, however, refused to quit and closed to within 83-74 at 3:22 on a three-pointer from Bogan that ended a 12-2 run. LU continued to battle and was within seven points at 90-83 with 42-seconds left on the clock after a three-pointer from Robinson. CSU, though, secured its home win with a late dunk from John Cantrell and two more free throws by Holston who was limited from the field (2-14 FG) all night by sophomore Durann Neil/Pleasantville, N.J. (Leap Academy).

Bogan finished with his game-high 21 points (5-8 3FG), adding eight rebounds and four assists to lead Longwood. Smith had 18 points, nine rebounds, and three blocks for the Lancers, while Robinson added 13 points. Neil contributed six points, five assists, and two steals to his defensive effort against Holston. LU shot 40% (30-75) from the field, including 36% (11-31) on three-point field goals, and 54% (13-24) at the free throw line.

Holston finished with his game-high 21 points (2-14 FG, 2-5 3FG, 15-16 FT), adding five assists to lead Chicago State. Mike Wilson had 17 points (8-10 FT) for the Cougars, while Carl Montgomery added 14 points and nine rebounds. Cantrell contributed 13 points and 10 rebounds, and Tawrence Walton had 10 points and 10 rebounds. CSU shot 41% (27-66) from the field, including 29% (4-14) on three-pointers, and 80% (36-45) at the line as the 36 points at the charity stripe proved the difference in the contest.

Chicago State now leads the all-time series between the two schools at 2-0 after taking a 94-86 road win at Longwood in Virginia last month (Jan. 12).
