BOX SCORE

EDINBURG, Texas – Longwood University dropped an 86-82 men's basketball decision on the road at Texas-Pan American Saturday night in Edinburg, Texas. The disappointing road loss stopped a seven-game winning streak for the Lancers (14-11) who were led by senior Ryan Bogan/Oxford, Pa. (Harcum JC) with 23 points. The host Broncs (7-16) needed 69% (33-48) shooting from the field, a game-high 25 points from Emmanuel Jones, and 23 points from Jared Maree to earn the victory after losing at Longwood 77-61 just four days ago. Longwood will play again on Monday night, February 16, at Chicago State University beginning at 8 p.m..

Longwood fell behind 4-0 at the start before rallying back to tie the game at 9-9 just four minutes in on a three-point field goal by junior Kevin Swecker/Manchester, Md. (Mount Saint Joseph). The Lancers led 14-13 at 12:21 after a jumper from freshman Antwan Carter/St. Petersburg, Fla. (St. Petersburg). Texas-Pan American, however, used an 18-7 run to lead 31-21 at 6:30 as Jones (9) and Maree (6) had 15 of the points. LU, though, battled back with a 14-4 run to tie the contest at 35-35 with 1:45 left in the half on a pair of free throws by sophomore Durann Neil/Pleasantville, N.J. (Leap Academy). A three-pointer from Bogan made it 40-40 before the Broncs took a 43-40 lead at the intermission with a three-pointer at the buzzer.

Longwood forged another tie early in the second half as Neil buried a three-pointer to make it 49-49 with 17:30 remaining. UTPA, however, took advantage of a 15-4 run to lead 64-53 at 11:03 as Maree converted a three-point play. The Lancers pulled to within 64-57 at 10:00 on a pair of free throws from redshirt-junior Dana Smith/Woodbridge (C.D. Hylton), but the Broncs extended their lead to 74-60 at 7:11 on a layup from Maree. It was still a double-digit lead for the hosts at 75-63 with 5:56 on the clock before the visitors closed to within 79-75 at 3:01 on two more free throws from Smith, and his jumper made it 81-78 at 1:58. Jones answered with a basket at 1:27 for an 83-78 lead and the hosts made just enough free throws (3-6) over the final 41-seconds to maintain the advantage for the win.

Bogan finished with his 23 points (4-7 3FG), adding seven rebounds, to lead Longwood. Swecker had 18 points (7-8 FT) and three steals for the Lancers, while Neil added 14 points (3-7 3FG) and five assists. Smith contributed 13 points (7-8 FT) and a game-high nine rebounds, adding four assists, and Carter scored nine points before fouling out. LU shot 42% (25-60) from the field, including 38% (8-21) on three-point field goals, and 80% (24-30) at the free throw line.

Jones finished with his game-high 25 points (11-12 FG), adding eight rebounds and a game-high five blocks to lead Texas-Pan American. Maree had 23 points (10-12 FG) for the Broncs, while Nathan Hawkins added 13 points, and P.J. Turner contributed a game-high 12 assists. UTPA shot 69% (33-48) from the field, including 40% (4-10) on three-pointers, and 62% (16-26) at the line. UTPA was able to even the all-time series between the two schools at 1-1 while avenging its 77-61 road loss to Longwood in Virginia earlier this week (Feb. 11).
