BOX SCORE

FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University won its seventh-straight men's basketball game with a 77-61 home win past visiting Texas-Pan American Wednesday night at Willett Hall in Farmville.  Redshirt-junior Dana Smith/Woodbridge (C.D. Hylton) and junior Kevin Swecker/Manchester, Md. (Mount Saint Joseph) each scored 13 points to lead the host Lancers who improved their record to 14-10 overall, including 11-2 at home this season.  UTPA dropped to 6-16 overall while led by Emmanuel Jones with a game-high 17 points.  Longwood, enjoying its finest season as a Division I program and best overall since 2002-03 (15-14), will play again on Saturday, February 14, on the road -- uniquely in a return contest at Texas-Pan American in Edinburg, Texas beginning at 8 p.m..

Longwood led early at 5-2 as junior Billy Robinson Jr./Columbia, Md. (Hammond) scored five quick points, and the Lancers still led 13-9 at 11:40 after a layup from freshman Antwan Carter/St. Petersburg, Fla. (St. Petersburg).  Texas-Pan American rallied back to take a 16-13 lead at 10:01 behind a 7-0 run sparked by five points from Nathan Hawkins.  LU, though, responded with a 17-4 run to take control at 30-20 with 4:18 left until the break as four different players scored, including seven points from Smith.  The hosts led 36-28 at the intermission as Smith (9) and Robinson (7) combined for 16 first-half points, while Hawkins (12) and Jones (11) had 23 of the 28 points for the Broncs.

Longwood extended its advantage early in the second half, leading 45-32 at 15:32 on another layup by Carter but UTPA used a 7-1 run to pull within 46-39 with 11:56 left.  The Lancers, however, answered with their own 21-7 run to lead 67-46 at 6:06 as eight different players contributed with three-point field goals from Smith, Swecker, and freshman Martiz Washington/Hopewell (Christchurch).  LU ed by as many as 25 points (77-52, 1:39) before the Broncs closed with the final nine points of the game to reduce the final margin.

Smith and Swecker each led Longwood with their respective 13 points, with Swecker adding three steals while Smith fouled out with 8:36 on the clock.  Robinson finished with 12 points and six rebounds, and Carter had nine points off the bench for the Lancers.  LU shot 43% (22-51) from the field, including 35% (8-23) on the three-pointers, and 64% (25-39) at the line.  The Lancers, fourth in Division I turnover margin (+6.2), forced 26 turnovers that were converted into 24 points with 10 steals as well.

Jones led UTPA with his game-high 17 points, adding a game-high 10 rebounds.  Hawkins finished with his 12 points, adding seven rebounds for the Hawks.  UTPA shot 40% (21-53) from the field, including 17% (2-12) on three-pointers, and 61% (17-28) at the line.

Longwood and Texas-Pan America were meeting for the first-time ever in men's basketball, and as mentioned, the two teams will uniquely meet again in Edinburg, Texas on Saturday night.  The current seven-game winning streak equals a similar streak accomplished during 2000-01, and is the longest winning streak for the program since an eight-game streak during 1994-95 (DII, 19-9).
