HARRISONBURG, Va. - The Longwood University women's basketball team fell at #25 James Madison University of the Colonial Athletic Association 85-67 on Monday evening in Harrisonburg. Sophomore
Brittanni Billups/Goldsboro, N.C. (Eastern Wayne) led the Lancers with a career-high 17 points including shooting 9-11 from the foul line. James Madison's (8-1) Dawn Evans scored a game-high 32 points and added six assists. Longwood (4-9) returns to action on Monday, December 28, when they host CAA-member Virginia Commonwealth University at 4 p.m. in Willett Hall on campus in Farmville.
JMU led wire-to-wire but the Lancers kept the game close with the Lancers trailing 12-7 at the first media timeout. Sophomore
Morgan Smith/Williamsport, Md. (Williamsport) scored five of the first seven points for Longwood.
Morgan Smith hit another three-pointer to cut the lead to eight at 24-16 with 9:57 remaining. JMU's lead grew to 45-28 at halftime.
Morgan Smith scored 10 points in the first half and Billups added six points.
The Lancers cut in to JMU's lead early in the second half, going on a 7-2 run to cut the lead to 12 at 54-42 at the first media timeout of the second half. The lead hovered around 12 points for much of the second half until the 5:58 mark when JMU started pulling away. Billups scored nine of the final 11 points for Longwood, going 7-for-8 from the foul line during the stretch.
Morgan Smith finished with 12 points on 4-for-6 shooting, including 2-for-2 from behind the arc. Junior
Krystal Garrison/Fredericksburg (Courtland) added 11 points, the eighth-straight game she has scored in double-figures. Freshman
Chelsea Coward/Mechanicsville (Hanover) scored 10 points with six rebounds. Longwood shot 33.3% (22-66) from the floor and 71.4% (20-28) from the foul line.
Sarah Williams scored 13 points and Tarik Hislop grabbed a team-high eight rebounds. The Dukes shot 42.9% (27-63) from the floor and 62.5% (25-40) from the foul line. JMU out-rebounded Longwood 49-33.
