Longwood Falls At The College of William and Mary 84-65

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Longwood University dropped an 84-65 men's basketball road decision at the College of William and Mary Wednesday night in Williamsburg. The Lancers (0-8) were led by sophomore Antwan Carter/St. Petersburg, Fla. (St. Petersburg) with 13 points and eight rebounds off the bench. The Tribe (5-2) were led by the David Schneider with a game-high 22 points. Longwood will play again on Saturday, December 5, hosting Florida Gulf Coast University (0-5) on-campus at Willett Hall in Farmville beginning at 2 p.m..

Longwood led 6-3 just 1:08 into the contest as sophomore Martiz Washington/Hopewell (Christchurch) made two quick three-point field goals; it was 8-6 at 18:01 after a layup by senior Kevin Swecker/Manchester, Md. (Mount Saint Joseph), and it was tied at 11-11 following a three-pointer from Swecker at 15:47. William and Mary, however, used an 18-6 run with points from six different players to lead 29-17 with 3:37 left until halftime. The Tribe led 34-25 at the intermission as Quinn McDowell scored 10 first-half points for W&M.

William and Mary took complete control of the contest with a 19-6 run to open the second half behind seven points from Schneider to lead 53-31 at 12:09. The Tribe took their largest lead at 70-42 with 6:50 on the clock as Schneider tallied nine more points. Longwood was able to reduce the deficit down the stretch by outscoring the hosts 23-14 over the final 6:34 as redshirt-senior Dana Smith/Woodbridge (C.D. Hylton) scored 10 late points for the Lancers.

Carter led Longwood with his 13 points and eight rebounds in 27 minutes off the bench. Smith and Washington each finished with 12 points for the Lancers. LU shot 42% (23-55) from the field, including 44% (11-25) on three-pointers, and 62% (8-13) at the free throw line.

Schneider led William and Mary with his game-high 22 points, including 16 points in the second half. Kyle Gaillard had 15 points off the bench for the Tribe, McDowell added 14 points, and Marcus Kitts had nine points and a game-high 13 rebounds. W&M shot 48% (27-56) from the field, including 41% (11-27) on three-pointers, and 70% (19-27) at the line.

Longwood completed a season-opening stretch of eight games in 19 days at William and Mary, including seven contests away from home. The Lancers will begin a much-needed and welcome stretch of six consecutive home games this Saturday against FGCU in Willett Hall.
