BOX SCORE

SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, Texas –
Longwood University dropped a 66-62 men's basketball decision to Bethune-Cookman University Friday afternoon at the South Padre Island Convention Centre in Texas. It was the third round of the South Padre Island Invitational as the Lancers (0-6) were led by sophomore Antwan Carter/St. Petersburg, Fla. (St. Petersburg) with 19 points off the bench. The Wildcats (2-3) of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference were led by the C.J. Reed with a game-high 21 points. Longwood will play its final game in the exempt tournament for seventh-place on Saturday, November 28, against Chattanooga of the Southern Conference on South Padre Island, Texas beginning at 12:30 p.m. ET.  It will be streamed live on the Internet via PPV ($8) on the FOX College Sports Broadband Network.

Longwood led early at 12-7 with 15:09 left in the first half as senior Kevin Swecker/Manchester, Md. (Mount Saint Joseph) made two quick three-point field goals. Bethune-Cookman used a 14-4 run to lead 21-16 at 10:57 after a layup by Reed in the closely-played contest that featured 13 lead changes and seven ties throughout. The Wildcats still led 29-26 at 4:23 following a jumper from Albert Abrahams. The Lancers, however, closed the half strong with an 8-4 run to lead 34-33 at the intermission as redshirt-senior Dana Smith/Woodbridge (C.D. Hylton) scored six quick points, including a three-pointer.

Longwood maintained its narrow advantage and led 42-39 at 15:40 after a layup by senior Billy Robinson Jr./Columbia, Md. (Hammond). Similar to the opening half, Bethune-Cookman once-again rallied back with a 14-5 run to lead 53-47 with 10:17 on the clock behind six points from Reed. The Lancers would answer, though, with their own 15-9 run to tie the game at 62-62 with 1:55 remaining on a pair of free throws from Carter. A tip-in by Alexander Starling at 1:30 made 64-62 B-CU before LU had an opportunity to tie on a one-and-one free throw opportunity at 0:27 but missed the first attempt. The Wildcats secured the neutral-site win with 2-4 free throws over the final 17-seconds.

Carter led Longwood with his 19 points in 25 minutes off the bench. Smith finished 14 points and seven rebounds for the Lancers, while Swecker added 12 points (4-7 3FG) and Robinson had 10 points. LU shot 38% (24-64) from the field, including 31% (5-16) on three-pointers, and 64% (9-14) at the free throw line.

Reed led Bethune-Cookman with his game-high 21 points. Starling had 19 points and 11 rebounds for the Wildcats, while Abrahams added 13 points off the bench. B-CU shot 46% (24-52) from the field, including 14% (1-7) on three-pointers, and 77% (17-22) at the line – for the difference in the outcome. It was the first-ever meeting between the two schools in men's basketball.
