CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Longwood University fell at the #13 University of Virginia of the Atlantic Coast Conference 2-0 on Wednesday night at Klockner Stadium in Charlottesville. Sophomore goalkeeper
Joel Helmick/Springfield (W.T.Woodson) had three saves in the loss. The Lancers return to action on Saturday, October 10, when they open their Atlantic Soccer Conference schedule against the New Jersey Institute of Technology at 12 p.m. in Newark, New Jersey.
Virginia jumped on top in the sixth minute when Brian Ownby took a through ball past Helmick and put the it in to the empty net. The Cavaliers would add a second goal in the 11th minute when Chris Agorsor chipped the ball over Helmick from 15 yards out. To make matters worse for Longwood, sophomore
Zack Mahon/San Antonio, Texas (William Howard Taft) was sent off in the 30th minute, forcing the Lancers to play down a man the final 60 minutes.
“I was disappointed with our start today,” said Longwood head coach
Jon Atkinson. “Once we came around then we competed with them, even though we were down a man. You can't give a team like Virginia a two goal head start and expect to win. We had several flurries later in the game where we attacked and we just need to do that more consistently.”
Longwood was led by junior
Harvey Headley/Coventry, England (Stoke Park) with two shots. Seniors
Brian Germain/McLean (Langley) and
Marcus Dixon/Gloucester (Gloucester) each had one shot. Virginia was paced by Agorsor who had one goal on two shots and added one assist. Hunter Jumper also had an assist for the Cavaliers.
Virginia out-shot Longwood 16-4 and had a 9-1 advantage on corners, including seven in the second half.
