CARY, N.C. -- Longwood University women's cross country totaled 214 points to finish eighth among 14 teams Friday afternoon at the Great American Cross Country Festival run at the WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, North Carolina.  The University of Maryland took first place with its 23 points, while Terrapin Kristin Reed won the individual 5K race in 17:47.  The Lancers were led by senior Jacquelyne Chantry/Williamsburg (Lafayette) with her time of 19:45.  Longwood will compete again on October 16 at the Appalachian State/Blue Ridge Open in Boone, North Carolina beginning at 4:30 p.m..

"The improvements the ladies continue to make are impressive," said third-year head coach Catherine Hanson.  "My top three girls are handing off first place for the team with a healthy sense of competitiveness which is just terrific.  There were 14 schools this year -- all of varying levels of talent from Maryland, East Carolina, Campbell, and the University of Miami.  The ladies had such a strong presence in their race and ran so closely as a pack.  An eighth-place finish at a big meet like this is an achievement.  The next two race courses are fast, and I look forward to our next race at Appalachian State."

Chantry placed 43rd among the 119 collegiate runners and was followed by sophomore Jessica Alley/New Castle (Craig County) (19:52, 46th), freshman Megan Short/Erial, N.J. (Timber Creek) (20:22, 54th), along with seniors Laura Bland/Las Vegas, Nev. (Palo Verde) (20:22, 55th) and Melinda Lackore/Virginia Beach (First Colonial) (20:32, 60th).  Also running were freshman Jenna Sprinkle/Buchanan (James River) (21:09, 72nd) and junior Lauren Kuhns/Fredericksburg (Riverbend) (21:56, 81st), while freshman Alisha Royal/Vinton (William Byrd) did not finish the race.  Alley, Short, Sprinkle, and Kuhns each ran new collegiate-best times for the program.
