Senior Nick von Gersdorff Collects Two Hits, Three RBI Against Flames On Senior Day

FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University dropped a baseball doubleheader to visiting Liberty University Saturday afternoon at Lancer Stadium, falling 5-3 in the first game and 12-4 in the second game. The Lancers are now 22-25 while the Flames of the Big South Conference improved to 28-23 overall. Longwood and Liberty will play again on Sunday, May 11, in Lynchburg for the finale to the three-game weekend series at 1 p.m..

In the opener, Longwood trailed 3-0 as Liberty scored three runs in the second inning before the Lancers scored a run in their half of the second to make it 3-1. The Flames added two more runs in the third to lead 5-1, while the hosts scored single runs in the fifth and sixth for the final margin.

In the second, freshman Justin Morreim/Virginia Beach (Frank W. Cox) (2-4, RBI) doubled down the right-field line and later scored on a ground-ball out from senior Nick von Gersdorff/Purcellville (Loudoun Valley) (0-4, RBI). In the fifth, junior Jon Quigley/Annandale (W.T. Woodson) (0-1) walked with one out and later crossed the plate on a wild pitch. In the sixth, Morreim hammered a two-out, opposite-field solo home run to right field. Senior John Farrell/Nantucket, Mass. (Nantucket) (3-4) took the pitching loss with a complete-game effort, scattering 10 hits and five earned runs with seven strikeouts and three walks over the 9.0 innings.

Liberty was led by Aaron Grijalva (2-3, 2 RBI), P.K. Keller (2-4, RBI), and David Giammaresi (2-4) with two hits each, including a two-run homer from Grijalva in the second inning. Dustin Umberger (7-3) had the mound win with a complete-game effort as well, allowing just four hits and three earned runs with six strikeouts and three walks.

In the nightcap, Longwood trailed 5-0 as Liberty scored five runs in the first inning, and the Flames added single runs in each of the third, fourth, and fifth to lead 8-0. The Lancers scored a run in the sixth to make it 8-1 but the visitors scored two more runs in the eighth to lead 10-1. The hosts added three runs in the eighth before Liberty plated two more runs in the ninth for the final margin.

In the sixth, junior Robbie Bailey/Mechanicsville (Hanover) (1-5) reached on an infield single and scored on a two-out RBI double by sophomore Phil Cerreto/Midlothian (Midlothian) (2-3, RBI). In the eighth, freshman Brant Jones/Richmond (Monacan) (1-1) reached on a pinch-hit single and scored on an infield RBI single from classmate Chris Briere/Midlothian (James River) (1-3, RBI). After Bailey got on via an error, both he and Briere crossed the plate on a two-run double to left-center field by von Gersdorff (2-4, 2 RBI).

Senior Rob Moody/Midlothian (Midlothian) (1-3), making his first career start on Senior Day, took the pitching loss with the first 1.0 inning, allowing five hits and five earned runs with one strikeout and two walks. Classmate Isaac Weiderman/Chillicothe, Ohio (Huntington) pitched 5.0 innings of middle relief, scattering five hits and three runs, two earned, with one strikeout and one walk.

Liberty was led by Errol Hollinger (3-5, RBI) with three hits, including a double, while Keller (2-3, 2 RBI), Garrett Young (2-4, RBI), and Joseph Feeley (2-2, RBI) each had two hits. Giammaresi (1-5, 2 RBI) added a homer, while David Stokes (7-4) got the mound win with the first 7.0 innings, yielding five hits and one earned run with six strikeouts and no walks.
