FARMVILLE, Va. - Longwood University women’s lacrosse improved to 5-9 on the season Thursday evening, after knocking off Presbyterian College 22-10 at the Athletics Complex in Farmville. The Lancers were led by freshman Kesley Dean/Centreville, Md. (Queen Anne’s) who racked up six points after scoring three goals and dishing out three assists. Longwood returns to action on April 9 when it hosts Virginia Tech at 4 p.m. at the Athletics Complex. The Virginia Tech game will also serve as the Lancers senior night, where they will honor graduating seniors Alli Armstrong/Chestertown, Md. (Queen Anne’s), Joyce Haines/Prince Frederick, Md. (Calvert) and Jennifer Holliday/Gaithersburg, Md. (Quince Orchard).
Longwood fell behind 1-0 early in the first half when Jenna Handshoe scored an unassisted goal in the second minute for the Blue Hose. The Lancers answered back with four consecutive goals, three of which came from freshman Josie Ziluca/Upperville (Loudoun Valley). Ziluca netted her goals in the third, sixth and seventh minutes of action, while sophomore Page Farmer/Richmond (St. Catherine’s) scored in the fourth minute.
Presbyterian would make the score 4-3 in the ninth minute after scoring two goals of its own. Longwood would rally back, scoring a goal in the 11th minute courtesy of Britt Farquharson/Mississauga, Ontario, Canada (Lorne Park Secondary) who received a pass from freshman Amanda Bereznay/Gwynn Oak, Md. (Setan Keaugh). Junior Liz Sellmayer/Catonsville, Md. (Mount de Sales) scored her first goal of the game with 19:29 left to play in the half, putting Longwood up 6-3. Junior Lauren Barnaba/Bel Air, Md. (John Carroll) and freshman Cara O’Brien/Arlington (Bishop O’Connell) would also get in on the scoring, with O’Brien feeding Barnaba for the goal.
The Blue Hose would earn their fourth goal of the game in the 15th minute, but their excitement would be short lived as Longwood went on a 7-0 scoring run within a span of three minutes. During the Lancers scoring brigade, Dean would add two goals and two assists, while O’Brien would add a goal of her own as well as another assist.
The score would be cut to 14-6 with five minutes to play in the half, when Berkley Aiken scored for the Blue Hose. Freshman Karli Brentlinger/Gambrills, Md. (South River) would add her second goal of the game with three minutes remaining, to put Longwood up 15-6, but Presbyterian would get the last goal of the half cutting the Lancers lead to seven.
The Lancers would dominate the scoring in the second half, outscoring the Blue Hose 7-3. Presbyterian jumped out of the locker rooms by grabbing the first two goals of the second half thanks to two free position shots. Dean would start the scoring for the Lancers, putting one in the back of the net in the 50th minute and tallying her third assist in the 51st minute on a Brentlinger goal. Barnaba added her second goal of the game with 9:33 to play, while sophomore Carli Nethken/Hanover, Md. (Long Reach) connected with classmate Christine Comeau/Whitby, Ontario, Canada (Sinclair Secondary) for her first goal of the game.
Presbyterian would get its final goal of the game in the 54th minute, when Jordan Newberry scored on a free position shot. Longwood closed out the game with three consecutive goals coming from Nethken, Haines and freshman Shannon Holliday/Gaithersburg, Md. (Quince Orchard).
All three Lancer keepers saw action in the game with Holliday collecting one save, while sophomore Eliza Coughter/Charlottesville (Charlottesville and freshman Juli Liebig/Centreville, Md. (Queen Anne’s) each had one.
