FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University dropped an 8-3 baseball decision to visiting Binghamton University Sunday at Lancer Stadium in Farmville. The Lancers are now 6-4 this season after their recent four-game winning streak was stopped by the Bearcats (3-7). Longwood, with two of three wins during the weekend series, will play again on Tuesday, March 11, hosting George Mason University at Lancer Stadium beginning at 2:30 p.m..
In the series finale, Longwood spotted Binghamton an 8-0 lead through six innings before scoring three runs late to avoid the shutout. The Bearcats scored one run in the first inning, three runs in the third, and two runs in each of the fifth and sixth innings. The Lancers got a run in the seventh inning, and added two more runs in the eighth to provide for the final five-run margin.
In the seventh, sophomore David Smiy Jr./Chesterfield (Matoaca) (2-2) opened with a pinch-hit single before being forced-out at second on a ground ball by freshman Brant Jones/Richmond (Monacan) (0-2) who was pinch-hitting as well. Jones moved around to third on a double down the left-field line from sophomore Casey Havers/Thorofare, N.J. (West Deptford) (2-4), and scored on a sacrifice fly to left by senior Nick von Gersdorff/Purcellville (Loudoun Valley) (0-3, RBI). In the eighth, freshman Justin Morreim/Virginia Beach (Frank W. Cox) (1-1) had a pinch-hit single up the middle ahead of a one-out, two-run home run to left field from junior Jon Quigley/Annandale (W.T. Woodson) (1-4, 2 RBI). Freshman Marcus Powell/Manassas (Osbourn) (2-4) also had two hits for the Lancers.
Binghamton plated its run in the first inning behind three singles, and added three runs in the third on four singles, including a two-run single from Ken Jacobi (1-4, 2 RBI), and a walk as well. The Bearcats added two runs in the fifth inning on a two-run homer by Kyle Klee (2-4, 3 RBI), and scored two more runs in the sixth behind three more singles, including a two-run single from Ryan James (3-4, 2 RBI). Peter Bregartner (3-5) added three hits on the day, while Corey Taylor (2-5, RBI) had two hits as well.
Senior John Farrell/Nantucket, Mass. (Nantucket) (1-1) took the pitching loss with the first 3.0 innings, allowing seven hits and four earned runs with one strikeout. Murphy Smith (1-1) earned the mound win for Binghamton, scattering five hits and one earned run with six strikeouts over the first 7.0 innings.
