RICHMOND, Va. – The Longwood University women's basketball team fell to in-state opponent and Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) member VCU on Sunday afternoon by the final score of 79-49. The Lancers fall to 4-7 on the season, while the Rams improve to 9-2. Freshman Emma Zieverink/West Chester, Ohio (Lakota West) had a career night for the Lancers scoring a season-high 10 points, while collecting four rebounds. Freshman Sierra Fletcher/Utica, Ohio (Utica) had a game-high 12 points for the Lancers, shooting 8-8 from the free-throw line. Longwood returns to action on Tuesday, December 30 taking on West Virginia on the road with tip-off at 7 p.m. in WVU Coliseum.
Longwood got on the board first just a minute into action with a strong layup by Zieverink. The 6-1 freshman would score two more times in the half to lead the Lancers into the locker room trailing the Rams 39-12.
Zieverink once again put the Lancers on the board first, scoring 30 seconds into the second half with a drive up the middle of the Rams defense. Fletcher came alive in the second half, scoring all 12 of her points in the second period of action.
The Rams had four players score 10 points, including Kita Waller who ended the game with six rebounds. Freshman Morgan Smith/Williamsport, Md. (Williamsport) ended the game with a team-high six boards. Stephanie Solomon of VCU led both teams in rebounds, grabbing seven.
Longwood shot 38% (17-45) from the floor, while shooting 63% (12-19) from the charity stripe. VCU sbot 44% (26-59) from the floor and 67% (22-33) from the free-throw line.
