Longwood Runs Past Visiting NAIA Member Virginia Intermont 113-60

FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University took a 113-60 men's basketball home victory past visiting NAIA member Virginia Intermont College Saturday afternoon in Willett Hall in Farmville.  The Lancers (6-6) posted season-highs in points (113), field goals (43), three-point field goals (11), assists (23), and steals (21) while perfect at the free throw line (16-16) as well, led by freshman Antwan Carter/St. Petersburg, Fla. (St. Petersburg) who had his first career double-double with career-highs of 19 points and 11 rebounds.  Senior Ryan Bogan/Oxford, Pa. (Harcum JC) scored a game-high 20 points for LU, and redshirt-junior Dana Smith/Woodbridge (C.D. Hylton) added 18 points.  The Cobras (2-12) were led by Jimmie Ross with 16 points.  Longwood will break for the Christmas Holiday before playing again on Sunday, December 28, at Lehigh University of the Patriot League in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania beginning at 1 p.m..
   
Longwood took control from the beginning against Virginia Intermont, leading 20-5 at 13:55, including a 12-0 run as Carter (7), Smith (6), and Bogan (5) combined for 18 of the first 20 points.  The Cobras closed to within 28-20 at 9:58 before the Lancers scored 11 unanswered points to lead 39-20 at 7:44 en route to outscoring the visitors 31-9 to lead comfortably by 30 points at the intermission (59-29).  Longwood shot 58% (22-38) from the field during the opening 20 minutes, including 63% (5-8) on three-pointers, as Bogan (18), Smith (14), and Carter (9) combined for 41 first-half points.
   
Longwood began the second half with a three-pointer from junior Kevin Swecker/Manchester, Md. (Mount Saint Joseph) that started a 13-4 run for a 72-33 advantage at 17:01.  The Lancers never led by fewer than 33 points the remainder of the contest (72-39, 15:07), and took their largest margin at 55 points with just 1:18 left t0 play as all 13 players in uniform played and scored for the hosts who emptied the bench (putting last player into game) with 5:31 on the clock.
   
Bogan led Longwood with his game-high 20 points, adding four steals in 29 minutes, while Carter added his first career double-double with his career-highs of 19 points and 11 rebounds in just 15 minutes.  Smith finished with 18 points and four steals in only 18 minutes, while Swecker had nine points along with career-highs of seven steals and six assists in 24 minutes for the Lancers.  Sophomore Brandon Evans/Roanoke (Roanoke Catholic) added career-highs of nine points and seven rebounds in 15 minutes, and freshman Martiz Washington/Hopewell (Christchurch) also finished with nine points.  Junior #E.J. Dawson#/Ft. Belvoir (Mount Vernon) contributed a career-high six assists in 12 minutes.  LU shot 51% (43-84) from the field, including a season-best 50% (11-22) on three-pointers, and 100% (16-16) at the free throw line.  The Lancers had a 48-36 rebounding advantage, and also forced 30 VIC turnovers that were converted into 49 points.
   
Ross led Virginia Intermont with 16 points and five steals, while Akeem Price had 10 points.  VIC shot just 39% (21-54) from the field, including 40% (4-10) on three-pointers, and 42% (14-33) at the line.
   
Longwood now leads the all-time series against Virginia Intermont at 2-0, including last year's 79-73 overtime win in Farmville when Price posted 28 points and 11 rebounds.  The Lancers' 113 points were the most scored since 2001-02 (125, Practical Bible) when competing as a Division II program.  Longwood is enjoying its finest start to a season since 2002-03.
