CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University dropped a 90-61 men's basketball road decision at the University of Virginia of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Wednesday night at John Paul Jones Arena in Charlottesville. The Lancers (5-6) were led by freshman Antwan Carter/St. Petersburg, Fla. (St. Petersburg) with a career-high 13 points, while Sylven Landesberg led the Cavaliers (4-3) with a game-high 20 points. Longwood will play again this Saturday afternoon, December 20, hosting NAIA Virginia Intermont College at Willett Hall in Farmville beginning at 2 p.m..
Longwood fell behind 15-2 during the first 5:38 at Virginia as Landesberg scored six quick points for the hosts. The Lancers responded with seven-straight points to trail 15-9 at 13:12 but the Cavaliers answered with a 16-0 run to lead 31-9 at 8:26 after a three-point field goal by Jeff Jones as six different players scored points. Longwood, though, battled back and closed to within 36-27 with just 1:40 left until halftime before Virginia scored six points in the final 38-seconds of the half to lead comfortably at the intermission (42-27).
Virginia continued its momentum in the second half, expanding its advantage to 56-31 at 15:13 with a 14-3 run after a free throw by redshirt-junior Dana Smith/Woodbridge (C.D. Hylton) had made it 42-28 at 19:21. Landesberg scored eight points during the run, including 4-4 free throws. Longwood reduced the margin to under 20 points one time the rest of the way at 58-39 with 12:26 remaining on a three-pointer by junior Kevin Swecker/Manchester, Md. (Mount Saint Joseph). The Cavaliers took their largest lead at 76-47 with 6:38 remaining before Landesberg closed his night with two more free throws at 2:15 while the UVA bench contributed seven late points toward the final margin.
Carter led Longwood with his career-high 13 points, including 11 points in the second half, making 5-7 shots from the field and 3-5 at the line. Smith and senior Ryan Bogan/Oxford, Pa. (Harcum JC) each finished with 11 points for the Lancers. LU shot 39% (25-65) from the field, including 23% (5-22) on three-pointers, and 55% (6-11) at the free throw line. The Lancers did continue their streak of finishing with less turnovers than their opponent for the 11th-straight contest this season as UVA finished with 17 miscues to 13 by the visitors.
Landesberg led Virginia with his game-high 20 points, including 8-8 free throws, adding nine rebounds. Calvin Baker and Sammy Zeglinski each added 14 points, and Jamil Tucker finished with a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds for the Cavaliers. UVA shot 52% (33-64) from the field, including 38% (6-16) on three-pointers, and 75% (18-24) at the line. The Cavaliers did out-rebound the Lancers 49-23.
Virginia now leads the all-time series between the two schools in men's basketball at 4-0 as Longwood has played in Charlottesville each of the last four seasons.
