LEXINGTON, Ky. – Longwood University dropped a 91-57 men's basketball decision on the road at the University of Kentucky Monday night during a second-round game of the Findlay Toyota/Las Vegas Invitational at Rupp Arena in Lexington, Kentucky. The Lancers (3-3) were led by senior Ryan Bogan/Oxford, Pa. (Harcum JC) with 20 points and redshirt-junior Dana Smith/Woodbridge (C.D. Hylton) with 18 points. The Wildcats of the Southeastern Conference (2-2) were led by 6-9, 235-pound Patrick Patterson with a game-high double-double of 28 points and 12 rebounds. Longwood will play again on Friday, November 28, against Southeast Missouri State University at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada at 4 p.m..
Kentucky scored the first seven points of the contest and never looked back as Patterson was a man among boys inside and had his double-double by halftime with 22 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Wildcats to a 51-24 advantage at the intermission. Bogan kept Longwood from trailing even further at the break with 15 first-half points on 5-9 shooting from three-point territory. Bogan's fifth three-point field goal of the period at 4:57 had the Lancers within 38-24 but the hosts closed the half with a 13-0 run to lead comfortably at halftime. The margin remained in the 30-point range throughout the second half as Smith scored 14 second-half points for the visitors before fouling out with 3:36 remaining. Jodie Meeks scored 12 second-half points for UK.
Bogan finished with 20 points, including 6-12 on three-pointers while just one three-pointer from tying a Rupp Arena-record for opponent 3FGs (7) to lead Longwood. Smith had 18 points and six rebounds for the Lancers. Sophomore Durann Neil/Pleasantville, N.J. (Leap Academy) contributed five assists, and classmate Brandon Evans/Roanoke (Roanoke Catholic) had seven rebounds off the bench. LU shot 30% (20-66) from the field, including 31% (8-26) on three-point field goals, and 60% (9-15) at the free throw line.
Patterson finished with 28 points and 12 rebounds, including 12-15 field goals and 4-4 free throws, to lead Kentucky. Meeks had 17 points for the Wildcats, and Josh Harrellson (6-10, 265) added 12 points off the bench. UK shot 52% (34-65) from the field, including 23% (5-22) on three-pointers, and 69% (18-26) at the line.
It was the first-ever meeting between Longwood and Kentucky in men's basketball, and the sixth game in 11 days to open the season for the Lancers who travel to Las Vegas for the final two games of the Las Vegas Invitational Nov. 28-29 at the Orleans Arena. LU is 2-0 in the facility after winning two games there during 2006-07.
