FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University swept a collegiate baseball doubleheader from visiting Elizabeth City State (N.C.) Tuesday at Lancer Stadium, winning the first game 12-0 and the second game 7-6. The Lancers have now won 10-straight games to improve their record to 10-4 overall. Head Coach Buddy Bolding, in his 26th season, earned career win number 700 with the opening-game victory and is now 701-319-3 (.687%). Longwood will play again Thursday, March 11, hosting Shaw (N.C.) for another doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. at Lancer Stadium.
In the opener, Longwood scored seven runs in the 2nd inning and pounded 13 hits overall en route to the triumph, aided by seven ECSU errors. Senior Louis Shackelford/Newport News (Denbigh) (1-3, 4 RBI) delivered a grand slam home run to right field in the 2nd. Classmate Brian Medley/Halifax (Halifax Co.) (2-5), juniors Chris Balus/Newport News (Denbigh) (2-3, 2 RBI) and Brett Mooney/Virginia Beach (Salem) (2-3, RBI), along with freshmen Tyler Ames/Exmore (Northampton) (2-5, 2 RBI) and Charlie Yarbrough/Richmond (Mills Godwin) (2-4, RBI) each collected two hits to lead the attack. Freshman Alan Moore/Richmond (Monacan) (3-1) earned the pitching win with the first 5.0 shutout innings, allowing just two hits with two strikeouts. Sophomore Mike Williams/Hampton (Kekoughtan) preserved the shutout with the final 2.0 scoreless innings, yielding two hits with four strikeouts.
In the nightcap, Longwood fell behind early as the Vikings scored four runs in their first two at-bats. The Lancers rallied to tie the score at 4-4 through three innings, and 5-5 through four innings. ECSU went ahead 6-5 in the top of the 7th inning before LU rallied for two runs in its final at-bat, scoring the game-winning run with one out when Mooney (3-4, 2 RBI) hit a run-scoring single to left field. Mooney’s three hits and two RBI led the Lancer effort, including a solo home run to right field in the 3rd inning while Ames (2-4, RBI) added two hits, including a lead-off triple in the 7th -- Ames scored on a sacrifice fly from Medley (1-3, RBI). Freshman Zach Zigrang/Virginia Beach (Kempsville) (4-0) picked-up the pitching win in relief with the final 2.0 innings on the mound, allowing one hit and one unearned run with five strikeouts.
