BOX SCORE GAME #2

CONWAY, S.C. – Longwood University split a collegiate softball doubleheader at NCAA Division I Coastal Carolina Sunday in South Carolina, defeating the host school 5-1 in the opener before falling 3-2 in the nightcap.  The Lancers are now 27-11 on the season, while the Chanticleers are 14-18 overall.  LU will return to action Saturday, April 3, as the Lancers host Mountain State and Louisburg Junior College as part of the Lancer Classic at Lancer Field.

At Coastal in the opener, the Chanticleers got on the board first, recording one run in the bottom of the second inning.  Longwood quickly responded as senior Heather Williams/Brookneal (Appomattox) hit her first of back-to-back home runs – a two-run, game-winning shot – to give the Lancers the definitive lead.  Williams closed out the contest with three hits in four appearances at the plate, including her two homers, a double and four RBI.  Junior Alicia Stewart/Faber (Nelson Co.) and freshman Abbey Welch/LaPlata, Md. (McDonough) aided the Lancer offense, going 2-for-4 each.  Welch (15-4) also earned the pitching win, throwing four innings in relief with six strikeouts.

In the nightcap, the host school again posted one run in the second inning, taking an early 1-0 lead off a solo home run, until Longwood recorded two runs in the fifth to take back the advantage (2-1).  Coastal, however, proved to be too much for the Lancers, as it put up two runs in the bottom of the seventh frame to secure the home triumph.  Sophomore Shamana Washington/Rhoadesville (Orange Co.) led Longwood at the plate, going 1-for-2, while Stewart and junior Jen Steele/Manassas Park (Manassas Park) each went 1-for-3 with an RBI.  Steele (12-7) took the loss on the mound after throwing three innings in relief.
