FARMVILLE, Va. – Longwood University women’s basketball sophomore guard Kyndal Skersick/Orlando, Fla. has been named the Longwood Female ARMS Software Athlete of the Week. Skersick, who started both games last week, paced the Lancers with 22 points against High Point on Jan. 25. She set a personal best with eight free throws in that 81-65 defeat, in which she played a career-high 33 minutes. This season, Skersick is shooting a team-best 84.8% (28-33) at the line. She leads the team with 25 three-point field goals and is third on the squad with an average of 8.8 points per game.

Question and Answer Session with Kyndal Skersick and Steven Sommer

SS: What does being named Athlete of the Week mean to you?

KS: I think that it’s a big accomplishment because it shows I’ve been working hard and means I’ve been doing what I have to do for my team.

SS: Looking back at last week you put up 22 points against High Point. Talk us through your play that game.
KS: We were trying to get the win that night and get off this losing streak, so I knew I had to step up and try and help my team win. I was just trying to do what I could to help out.

SS: What goals do you have for the remainder of the season, both for you and the team?
KS: For myself, I want to keep playing at the level I am right now. For the team, I want us to hopefully get it together and get a couple of wins before we go into the conference tournament, so that we have a good feel and are confident coming in.

SS: How did your preparation in the offseason change coming into this year change from last year?
KS: Well I obviously wanted to get a bit more playing time than last season, so I knew I’d have to do something different then what I did the first year. Honestly, I just worked harder basically.

SS: The team is pretty young this year with a lot of the leadership coming from your sophomore class. How would you describe your role within that leadership on the team?
KS: I think that I’m pretty easy to talk to for the freshmen, and I’ve told them that they can come to me for anything. When they’re down in practice or a game I will tell them to keep their head up and keep playing.

SS: Going into games, do you have any superstitions or pregame rituals?
KS: Not really, nothing I can think of that’s really out of the ordinary.

SS: If you could swap places with any teammate for a day who would it be and why?
KS: That’s hard. Probably Brenna because she’s hilarious and she’s always in a good mood. I’d like to see how she sees everything.

SS: If you could have dinner with any three people in the world, who would they be and why?
KS: Dwayne Wade because he’s my favorite basketball player, Usher because he’s my favorite singer, and Ellen DeGeneres because she’s so funny.

SS: What’s your favorite pastime when you’re not focusing on basketball?
KS: Sleep. I also like to watch Netflix and shop.

SS: You mentioned you like watching Netflix. What’s your favorite movie?
KS: Titanic has to be my favorite.
