WILLIAMSBURG, Va. –Longwood men's golf leads the Golden Horseshoe Intercollegiate through two rounds at the Golden Horseshoe Golf as the team's top four golfers all finished in the top 20 on Monday.
Justin LaRue hit a hole-in-one, and he is tied for the lead in the 86-player field field following back-to-back 68s, but his teammates pitched in plenty of help too at the Par 71 course at the Golden Horseshoe Golf Club.
Nick Fleming is in the top 10, and
Hunter Swidzinski and
David LaFreniere both are in the top 20 as Longwood leads second-place William & Mary by nine strokes.
NOTABLE RESULTS:
Longwood fired a 280 in the opening round for a four-under par opening salvo, and it was the only opening round by a team throughout the day in the 13-team field.
The Lancers followed it up with a three-over 287 that, again, was the lowest round to stretch their advantage to nine strokes with one round to play.
Justin LaRue, fittingly, led the way. The senior ripped off a 68 to open the day, and then he pulled off the same feat in round two.
During that second round, he holed the third hole, a par 3, with an eight-iron on the 169-yard hole. His matching 68s tied for the second best rounds, and he was one of only two golfers with both rounds scoring below par.
Nick Fleming was also steady throughout the day. He posted a pair of clean, even-par 71s to finish even on the day. Fleming is tied for eighth, and he was at his best on his back nine in both rounds. All seven of his birdies on the day came in his final nine holes of each round.
Hunter Swidzinski, meanwhile, is tied for 14
th after posting a two-round score of 71-73—144 (+2). He had 10 birdies on the day.
David LaFreniere wraps up the top four Lancer golfers in a tie for 18
th. He opened with a one-under 70 before closing with a four-over 75. He too finished with 10 birdies on the day.
Scott Jordan finished tied for 23
rd after carding a 71-75—145 (+4). He shot nothing worse than a bogey on the day while tallying six birdies.
Alexander Hoerner opened with a solid first round 71 before fading in the second round with an 82 to finish the day tied for 65
th.
WHAT THEY SAID:
"We knew the forecast coming into this morning, so, of course, we were joking that it wouldn't be a tournament day if there wasn't rain," said Longwood Head Coach
Kevin Fillman. "Then, almost shockingly, the morning actually started without any rain. Once the rain moved in midway through the first round, all I thought about was how prepared we are for this. I actually felt really good from that point forward. While we did a number of things that cost ourselves shots, many of which were unforced, I thought we definitely handled everything that was going on fairly well."
"It's always great to have the lead," Fillman added. "At the same time, we still need to finish it off tomorrow. We fully expect the teams chasing to come after us, so we're going to have to stick to our gameplan and continue to be aggressive. We're looking forward to the challenge."
