FARMVILLE, Va. – Longwood University will host the seventh annual Greatest Athletics March Ever (The G.A.M.E.) on Friday, Aug. 26, beginning with a 3:30 p.m. celebration on Stubbs Mall and culminating at the Longwood women's soccer team's 7 p.m. showdown against Marshall.
For the first time in the event's seven-year history, the annual march through Farmville will take place on the first Friday after classes resume instead of the first Sunday of New Lancer Days. Following the First Friday Back celebration at 3:30 p.m., The G.A.M.E. pep rally and Longwood scarf distribution will kick off at 5:30 p.m. and lead into the 6 p.m. march from campus to the Longwood Athletics Complex. The march will take participating students, faculty and community members to the Longwood women's soccer team's 7 p.m. showdown against Marshall.
The G.A.M.E., which began during the 2010-11 academic year, marks the annual kickoff to Longwood's academic and athletic year and annually draws thousands of participants. This year's march, sponsored by Barnes & Noble, begins on Madison Street, continues across Main Street and through The Landings before connecting onto Longwood Avenue for the final stretch. Water and refreshments will be provided for participants during the march.
This year's pep rally features Farmville town manager Gerry Spates as a special guest speaker. Following the 7 p.m. soccer showdown, the Town of Farmville will host a special fireworks show for those in attendance at the game.
G.A.M.E. participants are encouraged to wear Longwood blue and white. Also, shuttles will be available to transport students to the event, as needed.
