Streaking Lancers End Season on High Note

Seniors Jennifer Burris and Meghan O'Connor Combine for Three Goals and Two Assists in Final Career Game

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Longwood's Jennifer Burris put in two goals and added an assist, while goalkeeper Katie Wyman recorded eight saves to lead the Lancers to a 4-0 shutout victory over St. Louis Sunday afternoon at Villa Duchesne High School.

The Lancers close out the season on a positive note with back-to-back shutouts to finish 7-10 overall with a 3-3 Mid-American Conference record. The senior forward Burris' two-goal game gives her 12 this season to finish tied for first in the MAC. Wyman earned the second shutout victory of her career and ends her freshman campaign with 38 saves.

"I'm extremely happy with the way we ended our season," said Longwood head coach Iain Byers. "The game itself was very enjoyable. We played very well and moved the ball effectively. This win streak gives us a good start into the next phase of our team's improvement."

Longwood came out firing with the first of three first-half goals coming two minutes in as Burris scored from the right of the cage off a pass from senior teammate Meghan O'Connor. Burris followed with an assist four minutes later on a pass to forward Edel Nyland who hit in a shot from the left side. At the 19-minute mark, O'Connor scored the second goal of her career with a penalty stroke to put the finishing touches on her final season.

Burris followed up with her third goal of the weekend in the 69th minute when she flipped the ball over St. Louis keeper Tori Westhead to cap off the team's five unanswered goals in two games.

Billiken keeper Westhead held her own in front of the cage, recording 17 saves on the Lancers' 21 shots on goal fired on the day.

St. Louis put up their own fight with 15 shots fired on the day, but Longwood's constant pressure, which lured St. Louis into committing 25 fouls, and a four-goal deficit were too much for the Billikens to overcome.

The five-point game gives Burris a career-high 27 this season to move her into a tie for second most in the MAC. She caps off a fantastic career in ninth place on Longwood's all-time career goals list with 32 and seventh on the program's all-time career assists chart with 20 assists. The four-year starter finishes with 87 career points, including 14 points in the last five outings.

Seniors Burris, O'Connor and Hollie MacDonald combined for four goals and two assists in Longwood's two games this weekend to close out their outstanding Lancer careers.

"This was a nice way for us to close out the season," Byers said. "It's a great way for our seniors to be sent off after four years of true commitment and hard work."

The Lancers head into the offseason as the team concludes its second season in the MAC tied for fourth place. A Miami (OH) victory over Ohio this weekend gave Missouri State a fourth-place tiebreaker and ended Longwood's bid for a MAC Championship tournament berth.
