Play4theCure Fundraiser & Benefit Jersey Auction

Play4theCure Video Promotion

FARMVILLE, Va. --
The Longwood University women's soccer program has partnered with the National Foundation for Cancer Research (NFCR) to participate in its Play4theCure fundraising campaign.  The Lancers have designated their match against Campbell University on Wednesday, October 23 at 7 p.m. at the Athletics Complex in Farmville for this effort.  A donation table will be located near the main entrance for all fans to donate to the cause and to help raise awareness.  Pink Play4theCure bracelets will also be sold for $1.

"When we have our own health, resources and opportunity to do something, it's important to take action and try to support those folks who live with and fight this terrible disease on a daily basis," said 20th-year head coach Todd Dyer '93.

The contest will be played in memory of Chris Henninger and David Kinslow.  Henninger is a brother of Coach Dyer, who recently passed away after a long battle with brain cancer.  Kinslow is the stepfather of Coach Dyer's wife, Cassie, who passed away a few years ago after his battle with cancer.  The program will also be honoring Longwood alumna, Sharron Frahm, who is battling ovarian cancer.

Commemorative Jersey Auction
To raise awareness for all types of cancer, the team will be wearing commemorative jerseys with a lavender ribbon on them, and these special game-worn jerseys will be auctioned off to help raise money for the cause.  The online auction will go live on Thursday, Oct. 17 at 1 p.m. and will end on Thursday, Oct. 24 at 1 p.m.  There is a minimum bid of $25 and a buy-it-now option for $100.  All team members, except for the goalkeepers, will have jersey postings (26 total), and all proceeds will go to the NFCR.  To get to the page, fans need to go to http://www.ebay.com/usr/nfcr1973 and click on 'Items for Sale'.  The auction site will be live beginning at 1 p.m., Thursday (Oct. 17).

About the National Foundation for Cancer Research
The National Foundation for Cancer Research (NFCR) is a leading cancer research charity dedicated to funding cancer research and public education relating to cancer prevention, earlier diagnosis, better treatments and, ultimately, a cure for cancer. NFCR promotes and facilitates collaboration among scientists to accelerate the pace of discovery from bench to bedside.

Since 1973, NFCR has provided over $309 million in support of discovery-oriented cancer research focused on understanding how and why cells become cancerous, and on public education relating to cancer prevention, detection, and treatment.  NFCR's scientists are discovering cancer's molecular mysteries and translating these discoveries into therapies that hold the hope for curing cancer. NFCR is about Research for a Cure - cures for all types of cancer.
