Men's Soccer Falls To Florida Atlantic On Penalty Kicks In ASC Championship Game

Max Griessbach Recorded The Lancers' Goal In Regulation

FARMVILLE, Va.-- Longwood University men’s fell to #1 seeded Florida Atlantic 8-7 in penalty kicks in Sunday’s Atlantic Soccer Conference Championship game held at the Athletics Complex.  The game game is officially recorded as a tie, after the two squads played through regulation and two ten minute overtime periods in a 1-1 stalemate.  Longwood finishes the season 8-8-3 while the Owls goe 9-7-3 overall.  Longwood and FAU went into the sudden death penalty kicks after both teams tallied four goals apiece through the first five opportunities.  Longwood was the number two seed coming into the tournament after posting a 3-2 conference record. 

Longwood had the first opportunity of the game as a header by sophomore Brian Germain/McLean (Langley) nearly found its way in the net, but was knocked out by FAU at the 18:25 mark in the first half.  The two teams took a scoreless tie into the locker room, with Longwood holding a 3-1 lead in shots. 

The Lancers jumped on the board first, as senior Max Griessbach/Bethesda, Md. (Walt Whitman) put in a rebound off an initial shot from junior Marcus Dixon (Gloucester, Va./Gloucester), in the lower left corner for the 1-0 lead with 13:09 left in the game.  With the Owls pressing looking for the equalizer,  FAU’s Gianni Piccoletti headed a cross that came into the Longwood box, but senior keeper Brandt Youmans/Gaithersburg, Md. (Damascus) made the save with 4:42 left in the game.  FAU however was able to tie the game at one with 1:49 left in the game on a Longwood own goal to send the game into overtime.

With no result in overtime the game went to penalty kicks.  Longwood went first and senior Sean Harney/Chesterfield (Lloyd C. Bird) got the Lancers going putting his shot past FAU’s keeper for the 1-0 lead.  With FAU the tie 4-4 FAU’s Liam Ogle’s shot was saved by Youmans to send the into sudden death penalty kicks. 

After the first three players on each team tallied goals, the Owls’ keeper stopped a Lancer shot and Markus Kaercher recorded the winning shot to give the Owls the win and ASC Championship.

Longwood had a 4-3 edge in corner kicks and both teams notched six shots in the game.  Youmans finished the contest with two saves and FAU’s Phillip Lamarre tallied five.
