High School: Four-year letterwinner in cross country and three-year letterwinner in track and field at Kings Fork High School…captained the cross country team as a senior…set a bevy of personal bests in both cross country and track as a senior…ran a career-best 17:18 in the 5K…hit personal-best indoor times of 2:55 in the 1,000-meter, 4:56 in the 1,600m and 10:44 in the 3,200m…also ran a 5:02 in the outdoor 1,600m and a 10:58 in the outdoor 3,200m…member of the Kings Fork 4x800 relay team that reached the state championship outdoor meet back-to-back years as a sophomore and junior, and indoor as a sophomore…placed seventh and sixth in the state outdoor meet, respectively…set his high school records for both indoor (8:29) and outdoor (8:09) in the 4x800…honored with the Bulldog Sportsmanship Award as a junior…also received the Rising Star Award in outdoor track as a freshman…member of the National Honor Society…honor roll student…has volunteered with the Nansemond River Preservation Alliance and with several other community service projects with Boy Scouts and his church youth group, including mission trips along the east coast, animal shelters and donations for the homeless.
 
Personal: Born Jack William Van Straten…son of Mike and Beverly Van Straten…grandmother, Marguerite Smith Cutchins graduated from Longwood in 1953, and aunt, Roseline Crenshaw Cutchings in 1979…has two cousins, Lindsey Cutchins Anderson and Kelsey Cutchins Beard, who played field hockey at James Madison.
