Longwood University men’s soccer team set out to “clean up the streets” of Farmville

On April 4, Longwood’s men’s soccer team hit the streets as part of the town’s “adopt-a-road” program. Twice a year members of the soccer team scour the Farmville streets of High Street and Germantown Road collecting trash from stretches of road close to campus.
Head coach Jon Atkinson sees this exercise as a worthwhile cause stating, ”Adopt-a-road is a great way our players can help the local community we are all part of. Longwood is working extremely hard to integrate with the town and through small steps such as this we can all work in unison to make Farmville a better place to live. There is a lot to be positive about these days in Farmville and just a walk through town you can see the rate of change in just the last year.”
Freshman soccer member and team manager, Alex Spirn from Williamsburg noted, “This was a great exercise for the team. We had fun while we walked the streets and collected some interesting trash – a grill, car parts amongst other things. Even though I’m not from here, I am here most of the year and feel part of the town. I hope the community appreciates the work we did and support Longwood and especially the men’s soccer team this coming fall.”
