Nationally Acclaimed Author/Lecturer Dr. Linda Carpenter To Present

FARMVILLE, Va. -- Nationally acclaimed author and lecturer, Dr. Linda Carpenter, will present a workshop titled “Achieving Gender Equity in Athletics” to the Longwood University Athletic Department on Monday, March 20, at 9 a.m. in Lankford AB. Dr. Carpenter will be on campus through the joint effort of Longwood Athletics and the University Women’s Studies Program as the featured speaker for Women’s History Month that day (March 20) at 3 p.m. in Bedford 103. She will also address the Longwood community as the featured Simkins Guest Lecturer that evening at 7:30 p.m. in the Hull Auditorium.

Dr. Carpenter’s major research topics, with co-researcher Vivian Acosta, center around a longitudinal national survey on the status of women in intercollegiate athletics as well as job stasis among senior women administrators in athletics and perceived causes for the declining representation of female leaders in sports (Women in Sport – A Longitudinal, National Study – Twenty-Seven Year Update from 1977 – 2004). She is the author or co-author of nine books, the most recent is Title IX. She has published nearly 40 articles, has presented at about 120 national, regional and local conferences, and has received approximately 40 grants.

“We are very pleased Dr. Carpenter will be sharing her legal expertise on issues in the workplace along with her research regarding the status of women in intercollegiate athletics, gender equity, and Title IX,” explained Barbara Dearing, Longwood Associate Athletic Director and Senior Woman Administrator. “Carpenter and Acosta are nationally acclaimed researchers and leaders in the emergence of women's athletics over the past three decades. Her longitudinal research work with Dr. Acosta is the ‘benchmark’ for women's athletics research studies. The very fact she is speaking on three separate legal topics while at Longwood demonstrates the breath of her expertise and knowledge of today's legal environment.”

Professor Emerita at Brooklyn College, Dr. Carpenter is an attorney and member of the New York State Bar and the United States Supreme Court Bar. Much of her work focuses on legal issues, primarily on gender equity. The American Bar Association also recognized her in 2003 with its Outstanding Nonprofit Lawyers Award for Outstanding Academics, and in 2004 the Sport and Recreation Law Association presented her with its Leadership Award. In October 2005, she was awarded the lifetime achievement award from the National Association of College Women Athletic Administrators (NACWAA).

The theme for Longwood University’s Women’s History Month 2006 is ‘Celebrating the History of Women’s Legal and Political Battles.’ Her presentation topic for the Women's Studies Program will be “Title IX: History and Implications for Women and Men.”

The Simkins Guest Lecturer topic will be “Legal Issues in the Workplace.”
