Men's Soccer Suffers Setback to Navy

FARMVILLE, Va. - The Lancer pressure mounted in the second half, but unfortunately the equalizer did not materialize. Longwood men's soccer suffered its second-straight setback, this time 2-0 to visiting Navy at the Longwood Athletics Complex on Tuesday night.

Trailing 1-0 at the break, the Lancers (5-2) outshot the Midshipmen, 11-4, in the final 45 minutes. Longwood twice hit the post and put four other chances on frame but could not break through.

Freshman Levon Saribekyan's volley chance just over five minutes into the second half rang on the left post. In the 63rd minute, it was Ezrah Serralde's lofting shot from the left side that hit off the right post.

Junior Joshwa Campbell nearly tied the match with a shot from just inside the penalty spot in the 70th minute, but Navy goalkeeper Sam Clark made a diving stop to his right, one of six saves on the evening, to preserve the Mids lead.

With the Lancers pressing for the equalizer, Navy (2-2-4) doubled its lead in the 78th minute. Ronan Harding knocked down a longball, and Denis Pauze fed right back Harding who scored under Longwood goalkeeper Thor Fletcher to push the lead to 2-0. 

The Longwood pressure continued late into the contest, culminating in a penalty kick with just over a minute remaining. Clark was up to task though with a diving stop on a Campbell PK to secure the shutout.

Navy opened the scoring in the 21st minute on a nice combo play. Duncan Sullivan played the ball across the top of the 18 to Jack Illig, and he scored inside the left post to put the visitor in front.

The Lancers outshot Navy, 17-13, on the evening and tallied four corner kicks to just one for the Mids. Fletcher finished with three saves in goal, while Serralde topped the team with five shots, including two on goal.
