LEXINGTON, S.C. — The Longwood men's tennis team is headed to its first-ever Big South championship match.
The No. 3 seed Lancers blanked No. 2 NJIT, 4-0, at the Lexington Country Tennis Complex Friday to will play for a conference title and automatic qualification to the NCAA tournament against top-seed Gardner-Webb Saturday at 2 p.m.
Longwood (13-5), which equaled its most wins since 2019 with the victory, received a 7-6 (8) victory from Marko Mrdak and Rufus Plane at No. 2 doubles to open the match with the doubles point. After the Highlanders' Soma Fukuhara and Wil Jenkins took the first match in doubles on court, 6-0, over Daniel Borisov and Timéo Puech, Daniel Lopez and Alejandro Uribe rebounded with a 6-2 win versus Riccardo Campagnola and Severin Risan to claim the point.
Longwood rolled from there. Plane began singles with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Skorjanc at No. 3 and Puech followed with a 6-1, 6-3 victory against Jenkins.
Uribe clinched the match at No. 6, winning, 6-4, 6-4, over Maxime Hankins.
Lopez was leading in the second set when his match at No. 4 with Campagnola was halted. Borisov and Fukuhara were knotted at one set apiece and 1-1 in the third set at No. 2.
NJIT's season comes to a close at 14-3 overall.
The Lancers were nipped by Gardner-Webb in their regular-season meeting in Farmville this season, 4-3. A win over the Runnin' Bulldogs in the title match would mark Longwood's first against Gardner-Webb since 2018.
