FARMVILLE, Va. – The Longwood men's soccer team hosts Wofford Friday at 7:30 at Longwood Athletics Complex.
 

LAST TIME OUT

  • Longwood defeated ETSU, 3-2, last Friday, Aug. 29, at home.
  • Graduate student Kevin Peprah finished off a nifty passing play with Brando Bedolla and Jesus Macaya, popping in a feed from across the six-yard box in the 78th minute to lift the Lancers to their first-ever victory over the Buccaneers in four tries.
  • The goal was the first of Peprah's collegiate career after playing 37 matches from 2021-24 at Rider.
  • Longwood built a 2-0 lead with goals in the 24th and 49th minutes from Bedolla and Syrus Conolly, respectively.
  • ETSU knotted the match with second-half tallies by in the 57th and 76th minutes from Henrique Cruz and Stanley Isaac.
     
SERIES HISTORY
  • Wofford holds a 5-2-1 lead all-time with the Lancers since the series began on Oct. 24, 1992 with a 2-0 Terriers' win in Spartanburg.
  • Longwood, however, has won the last two against Wofford, both away from home.
  • The Lancers claimed a 2-1 overtime decision on Oct. 8, 2019 with the winner coming from Markus Gronli in the 93rd minute.
  • On Oct. 15 of last season, Ethan Stevenson scored in the 57th minute off of an acrobatic bicycle-kick assist from Desmond Adeyemi and the Lancers came away with their only clean sheet of the season.
  • Max Hinke collected eight saves for his seventh career shutout.

LANCERS AGAINST THE SOCON

  • Longwood is 24-26-5 all-time against teams currently part of the Southern Conference.
  • The Lancers have fared the best against VMI, going 20-3-1 (.854).
  • Longwood also has two wins against Wofford — including a 1-0 shutout of the Terriers last season — and one versus UNCG.

SCOUTING WOFFORD

  • Wofford is 1-2-0 on the season under first-year head coach Ryan Osborne after beating Coastal Carolina, 5-2, on Aug. 31. 
  • The Chanticleers opened the scoring in the fifth minute before Wofford rattled off goals in the 16, 30th, 33rd and 78th minutes on the way to the win.
  • Nathan Simes scored twice and added an assist in the victory, and leads the team with those five points in three starts this season.
  • Wofford is averaging just 5.3 shots per match while surrendering 17.7. The Terriers have given up nine goals in three matches, six of which came in a shutout at the hands of No. 14 NC State on August. 24.
  • Wofford went 8-6-3 overall and 3-2-0 in the SoCon, moving on to the league semifinals as ETSU advanced on penalties.   
  • Defender Jakob Andersson was named preseason all-SoCon for the second consecutive season for a team that has been picked to finish fifth in the six-team league.

LANCERS IN THE NCAA RANKINGS

  • The Lancers are currently 10th in the country in shots per game at 18.5 through matches of Sept. 3 with Jose Coutinho second individually averaging six.
  • Longwood is 39th in points per game with six while Jesus Macaya has an assist in each of the two matches this season to rank seventh in the country in in assists per game.
  • Brando Bedolla is 16th nationally in points per game at 2.5.

LANCERS PICKED THIRD IN BIG SOUTH POLL

  • Longwood was selected to finish third in the Big South preseason coaches poll, announced on Aug. 13
  • The team received 41 points in the voting to finish behind just High Point and Gardner-Webb, which earned 62 and 55 points, respectively. Those two schools split the first-place votes with 2024 regular-season champion Panthers garnering six and the Runnin' Bulldogs picking up the remaining two nods for the top spot.
  • The third-place tag for Longwood represents a tie for the highest-ever finish in the Big South preseason poll, matching the 2022 squad.

  • Longwood returns to action Tuesday, Sept. 9 at 7 p.m., at Liberty on ESPN+.
  • The Flames hold an 18-5-7 lead in the all-time series, which dates to a Longwood win on Sept. 27, 1977 in Lynchburg, Va.
