CATONSVILLE, Md. – Longwood women's soccer battled throughout the night, but ultimately the Lancers (3-2) found themselves on the wrong side of the scoreboard in their first road match at UMBC.
Â
The Lancers outshot the Retrievers (3-1-1), but UMBC used a late second half goal to win 1-0.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Â
The Longwood offense put the pressure on UMBC throughout the night, outshooting UMBC in each half.
Â
Eight of Longwood's 11 shots were on goal, forcing the UMBC goalkeepers to combine to make eight saves.
Â
Meanwhile,
Sara Curtis made a trio of diving saves in the first half for the Lancers to keep the match scoreless at the break.
Â
Unfortunately for Longwood, UMBC's Grace Dunbar tucked it in the top corner in the 77
th minute for the only goal of the match.
Â
WHAT THEY SAID:
Â
"That result really stings because we did so many good things throughout the game," said Longwood Head Coach
Todd Dyer. "The one thing we didn't do was score a goal, in spite of all the chances we created, and that came back to haunt us in the end. I'm really pleased with how we kept them under pressure and dictated a lot of the game on both sides of the ball. But in the end it just wasn't enough, and we have to own that and move forward."
